    3. Hi Ken, The Rootsweb Female Nicknames List gives 'Nan,Nancy or Nanny' as a nickname for 'Ann,Anne or Anna' in English usage. And as Ian says,in Scotland it's a nickname for Agnes. The geography fits, the John Richardson bit fits. Could Ann have called herself Nancy by 1790? Have any of you worthy seekers after knowledge come across a similar possibility? > > I have a little book (Discovering First Names, Stan Jarvis) that describes Nancy as "diminutive of Anne" - which is strange because I thought "diminutive" meant "tiny" and Nancy is a bigger word than Anne! > > Ken (Liverpool) > > > ==== DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY Mailing List ==== > @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ > To reach every member of the list : > Send Email to .......
