Just an observation. Since your GRACIE was involved in banking and also had 2 sons who were writers I think it very likely he was a lawyer as well. Lawyers in country towns at the time often lent money on their own account and I can think of at least one other (in Melrose ) who was certainly a bank agent. Worth checking with the professional bodies in Edinburgh as they - sometimes- have biog details.
