A 'hind' was a farm servant hired at a hiring fair on a one-year contract and provided with a cottage as part of the contract. You'll probably find Farm Servants and Labour in Lowland Scotland, 1770 to 1914 by T.M. Devine. You probably will Neil Oliver's television depiction of Scottish history less so!
