    3. This from the Making of the Modern World (a gale database) The East-India register and directory, for 1815; corrected to the 17th November, 1814; containing complete lists of the company’s servants, civil, military, and marine, with their respective appointments at the different presidencies in the East-Indies; with indexes to the same, and lists of casualties during the last year. Together with lists of the Europeans, mariners, &c. not in the service of the East-India Company; and merchant vessels employed in the country trade. Compiled, by permission of the honorable the East- India Company, from the official returns received at the East-India House: by J. Mathison, A. W. Mason, & J. S. Kingston London, Printed by Cox and Baylis, [1815] Under Medical Establishment. Bombay. Assistant Surgeons: Names-Dates of Appt-Remarks George Johnstone 4 Nov On furlough. The names are arranged in date sequence and George is down as appointed in 1809. The same info appears in the next edition (ie 1816 corrected to 1815). I could not find him in 1819 directories and there dont seem to be any for 1817l. From another volume I discovered that he would have needed to be at least 20 on appointment and prerequisites for service included a diploma from one of a list of institutions which included the College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Assuming Assistant Surgeons had the same furlough as other employees and officers, George's furlough would have been 3 years. He is listed as on furlough in another 1814 directory but confusingly that is only corrected to Sep 1814. Anyway if this is your guy I suppose he should have gone back to the subcontinent in around 1817 or 1818 and done another stint, but I can find no further sign of him. Judy
