I am highly sceptical of anything 'wiki' but this site gives some background and fits with my own understanding of howe the religious census was conducted. i.e it WAS conducted by the churches. It was based on folk attending church. I'd need to hunt for my sources, but my recollaction was that the census suggested that 50% of the population attended church on census day. This seems substantive, but ministers were alarmed, because to them it meant half of the population did NOT attend church. It seems to have been worse than that from their perspective because there were many churchgoers who attended more than one service on a Sunday - so the 50% goers included people who were counted twice or perhaps three times.
