Hello Clever listers out there. Can anyone tell me the history of the Chalmers Presbyterian Churches? My ancestor was married in the one in Launceston, Tasmaniain 1860 and then today when I was driving in Vancouver I saw a Chalmers Presbyterian Church. I googled the name and found others in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. I could not find any history of the name. Was Chalmers philanthropic society like Carnegie who donated money for libraries? Thanks Donna
These, I would expect, will have been named after Rev Thomas Chalmers who led the breakway from the Church of Scotland in 1843 - The Disruption - and as a consequence formed the Free Church of Scotland.
