You are, of course, correct. The diary I mentioned does say that Mary left Janet and Thomas in Scotland and with Thomas's birthdate being around 1817/22 [according to census and death record], and Mary having left the country "presumably" by the time of Nichol's marriage to Elizabeth McKune in 1928, Thomas would have been quite young. Too many opportunities for guesswork and insufficient paperwork!
