Hello I am new to this list having only recently broken down a 'brick wall' which has been bothering me for the last 6 years. I had traced my 2xGt grandfather, William Mckerrow a draper and tea merchant, to Oxford near where he was married, underage, in 1833 and died in 1839. However it was not until a couple of weeks ago that a very helpful researcher informed me of a connection to his father, James Mckerrow who was married to Margaret Porteous and lived near Durisdeer. Margaret was borm in Merkland and baptised in May 1776. I am told that there is a gravestone to the memory of William in Durisdeer churchyard. I intend to come up to Dumfries to investigate more during the summer. Does anyone have this Mckerrow or Porteous family in their tree? I have looked at the ScotlandsPeople website but cannot find any reference to James birth or the marriage of James and Margaret which,I think, will have been in the above neighbourhood or in Ayrshire, possibly Auchinleck which is outside your area. I am also informed that he died in Ecclesmain, Thornhill in 1848 but cannot find Ecclesmain in the gazetteer. Any help or advice on any of this would be very welcome.
