    3. Hi Pat, Just to add grist to Stan's Mill. It is fortunate for researchers into Scottish Ancestry that the practice of giving a family surname as a MIDDLE name is quite common - it helps a lot in identification . In all the following examples from my own Trees the middle name is the surname of an Ancestor - not always on the female side. John BELL Byers, Elizabeth MAYWOOD Cameron, John FREEDLAND Hastie, David LOCH Liddle, William DAVIDSON Pryde, and James REID Waddell - to name but a few. Having ancestors in both camps (English & Scottish) I can confirm that this practice, while not unheard of in England, is far more prevalent in Scotland. Best wishes, Tony.
