Hi Neil The law of primogeniture applied until 1964 but it was slightly different. It applied to the eldest son but if there were only daughters, they shared equally (They became Heir's Portioners) Best wishes Ian A McClumpha Need help with your Scottish Family History research? This is the law that restricted inheritance of land (particularly farmland) to the eldest surviving son, or failing that, eldest surviving daughter. I am particularly interested in a farm where the farmer (my ggrandfather) died in 1891. I suspect that it was probably a tenant farm but would like to confirm. Alternatively, Is there any other way I can determine ownership of the farm? thanks Neil Perth, Aus *I a^m cl24ng my k*ey9b0$rd ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
