    3. >From Tony's angle, and I have many such named in this manner in my own tree, then Isabella Campbell MacTaggart could have been born Isabella MacTaggart with Campbell as a middle name (i.e. a second forename) to record the Campbell line in an ancestor. I have, for example, a Margaret Dundas Mitchell Murray in my tree. She is basically Margaret Murray but "Dundas" records her paternal grandmother's maiden surname and "Mitchell" records her mother's maiden surname. So it could be that Isabella MacTaggart's mother or grandmother was a Campbell. In that case she would have been known in her community as Isabella MacTaggart. It is possible that, on arrival in Australia, a conscious decision was made to change the family surname to Campbell MacTaggart to record for posterity in the new country the two family lines which had converged and to make a distinction from other unrelated MacTaggart's. By the way, and probably irrelevantly, there is a Jessie Campbell formerly McTaggart in the 1891 census at Buittle, Kirkcudbrightshire, about 12 miles from Twynholm. And there is an Isabella Campbell baptised 23 August 1819 in Tongland parish which adjoins Twynholm parish. It is fortunate for researchers into Scottish Ancestry that the practice of giving a family surname as a MIDDLE name is quite common - it helps a lot in identification . In all the following examples from my own Trees the middle name is the surname of an Ancestor - not always on the female side. John BELL Byers, Elizabeth MAYWOOD Cameron, John FREEDLAND Hastie, David LOCH Liddle, William DAVIDSON Pryde, and James REID Waddell - to name but a few. Having ancestors in both camps (English & Scottish) I can confirm that this practice, while not unheard of in England, is far more prevalent in Scotland. Best wishes, Tony. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Just out of curiosty who are Isabella Campbell Mctaggart's parents? I too have a Isabella Mctaggart in my family my 2x.great grandmother also from Kirkcudbrightshire. Couldn't the Campbell part of her name also be a first husband's surname and Mctaggart her second husband's surname? Or Isabella Campbell and then married a mctaggart. My ancestor was known as Isabell Mctaggart Clarke, never willing to give up her surname in all legal transactions here in the US in late 1800's. I haven't seen a lot of middle names used in records prior to 1840's certainly none used in my four family lines that go back to the 1700's in the Dumfries Galloway area.
