    3. Hi Pat Double-barrelled surnames are unusual in Scotland. It is looked on as being a bit English or a bit posh. We commoners unkindly joke that people with such are not sure of their parentage. In truth, some women of a distinctive family name/tradition who married would create a new double-barrelled surname by inserting their maiden name before or after that of her husband. For example Jean Smith might marry Tom Jones and from then on call herself Jean Smith-Jones and pass on the new surname to her children. Sometimes this happened if a female was the last of the line of a family name and she didn't want the family name to die out, or sometimes it was done as a condition of inheritance. I am thinking of the Murray-Usher family in Kirkcudbrightshire, or the Maxwell-Stuart family of Traquair. What I am saying is it is possible you are looking for someone born Isabella Campbell or Isabella MacTaggart and, for whatever reason, adopted the surname Campbell MacTaggart before emigrating. Just a thought Stan -----Original Message----- From: dumfries-galloway-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:dumfries-galloway-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Pat Pitts Sent: 03 April 2010 11:23 PM To: DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY@rootsweb.com Subject: [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] CAMPBELL MAC TAGGART - TWYNHOLM Hi Listers With the Campbell listing I thought I would ask the question. Does anyone have any person with the surname Campbell Mac Taggart/Mc Taggart. I am trying to trace my Great Great Great Grandmother Isabella Campbell Mac Taggart who came to Australia from Twynholm. I know nothing else about her except she married John Rigg (I have the 1838 wedding info). Maybe there are some others in the area with the same surname. Campbell Mac Taggart was on her death certificate here in Australia.
