    3. Hello All! I was wondering if anyone would perhaps be able to point me in the right direction of locating someone in the Kirkmabreck/Creetown area who I could contact re. the history of an old local house, Hill of Burns, which is now a home offering self-contained accommodation. My Hughan family had a long connection with the property Burns Park, Creetown, in the 18th century- my g-g-g grandfather Robert Alexander Hughan was born there in c. 1795, to parents Alexander Hughan and Agnes Herries. The earliest record I can find with an association with 'Burns' are three Kirkmabreck baptisms of Alexander, Patrick and Andrew Heuchan, sons of "Alexander Heuchan in Burns", in 1718, 1721 and 1726 respectively, although there are records of Heuchans in the area in the 1600s. Andrew Heuchan/Hughan of Creetown makes mention of the "park called Burns" in regard to a heritable bond in his will of 1809, and in the New Statistical Account of Scotland:Kirkcudbright in 1845, it is noted that "Hill House, the property of Thomas Hughan Esq, of Airds, is a very substantial building." Even now I believe there is a suite at Hill of Burns called the Thomas Hughan Suite. I am desperately keen to obtain some sort of history of this old home, and being unable to find a published account I guess the only thing to do now is find a local historian to ask questions of. I would very much appreciate any suggestions- I am in central west NSW, Australia, so planning a weekend visit to Kirkcudbright is not on the near horizon (unfortunately!) Many thanks, Jen

    3. Hi Jen I have just spoken to Sheila Mackenzie [+441671 820487] who lives at Hill of Burns and she advises the house was once called “The Hill.” She knows of the association with the family name Hughan. She recommended speaking to the Creetown Heritage Museum as they have a local history group http://www.creetown-heritage-museum.com/index.html I found these items on the internet: WGD77/1 Creetown, The Hill. Basement, ground and first floor plans. Titled: ' "The Hill" Creetown. Alterations & Additions: Drawing No 1'. Insc: '35 Frederick Street Edinr Novr 1901.' RCAHMS collection Dunn and Findlay http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search_item/index.php?service=RCAHMS&id=63308 http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search_item/index.php?service=RCAHMS&id=211160 Kind regards Stan On Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 8:56 AM, Jen Lamond <sheridanallstate@bigpond.com>wrote: > Hello All! 3. Hi, A distant ancestor of mine bought "Hill House" in Creetown. Would "The Hill" be one and the same? Cheers, Steve.
