Another question. What does this phrase mean "Wm McKie a portions (or portioner?) in Torrorie? What is a portions? Thanks for your help. Janet Taylor Canada
A portioner is a person who owns a portion of an estate. My own ancestor was a portioner of Gregorie, Kirkcudbright, her brother had died unmarried and without heirs and his land was divided between his two sisters, his only heirs, each had a half portion of the lands of Gregorie. Their husbands became known as portioners too, the land was joined again in the next generation when the son of my ancestor took over the other portion. When you go to Scotland visit Ewart Library there may be some transcribed documentation regarding the portioning of this land, its where I found all my information, there's quite a lot indexed.
