Hello again I’m still trying to solve the marriage problem with my grand parents. Peter TEMPEST and Margaret THOMPSON about 1895. Lots of people have replied with negative answers . So I was wondering would it be possible for them to have married at Gretna Green and the minister not to have registered it You see Grandpa was born in Birmingham in 1869 not registered then Baptised with his sister in 1872 and the Vicar didn’t register that either I found that out because the BMSGH which I’m a member have a database for St. Matins church Birmingham and I then went to our registry office and a lovely lady there explained how the clergy carried out the ceremony and then pocketed the money without registering. So Peter TEMPEST born 1869 Birmingham Margaret THOMPSON born 1875 Maryport Married Gretna Green 1895/6 Ray T
Ray, Obviously greed knows no boundaries. I'd say that based on the history of some of the Vicars that there is more than an even chance that this is what happened. I know that it is frustrating to not to be able to find them as I have been trying to find a marriage for my grandfather in Scotland for decades - still no success... Good hunting, Cliff. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ray Tempest Sent: Thursday, November 24, 2011 2:32 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] Still hoping Hello again I’m still trying to solve the marriage problem with my grand parents. Hi Ray Although English registration began in 1837 it was not compulsory until around 1872. The Scottish system was statutory from the beginning in 1855. In Scotland, it was legal to marry ' by declaration in the presence of witnesses' until 30th June 1940. In Gretna, the 'priest' would advise his clients to register the marriage but few did. There are records for most of the Gretna Green marriages but many married in other places. If they had children born in Scotland then the birth certificates come in useful as they state place and date of parents marriage. Its possible that they never married, when registering children you didn't have to prove you were married. Vanessa All records are subject to error. Let they without typo caste tea thirst scone!
