    1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] Hurst - Porteous

    3. Hi Listers, I am working on a problem which has brick-walled me for many years. My Gt-Grandmother was married at Gretna 22nd April 1849 at which time she was 3 months pregnant and about 19 years of age. She was married as Eliza Hurst to John Graham and at the time both gave their addresses as St Cuthbert's in Cumberland (Carlisle). A witness to the marriage was a James Porteous who was obviously very close to Eliza as her first children were born at his home in Carlisle. Supposedly (I have no proof either way) James Porteous was married to Elizabeth (?). Eliza Hurst and John Graham were married again in St Cuthbert's, Carlisle on 9th November 1851 and again she gives her father's name as George Hurst, Doctor. By the time of this marriage she had already given birth to two children and was pregnant with her 3rd. I would also assume that by the time of this marriage she had reached the age of 21. On one document Eliza Hurst gave her birthplace as Ruthwell, Dumfries, Scotland. On virtually every record she gives her place of birth as Scotland but not the town or county. On almost all documents she gave her father as George Hurst, Doctor. If anyone can assist me with even small details that could assist me in tracking down her baptism or the marriage of James Porteous to Elizabeth (?) I would appreciate your help very much. Best regards, Bruce Glass New Zealand

    3. Bruce, Well, this is certainly intriguing as I have a Hurst family closely connected to ours; however, the best that I have been able to do is to find the family in Londonderry Co., Ireland, ca. 1808. One of this Hurst family married our Francis "Frank" Johnston, b. 1805 - location is a problem though for Frank's birth. His wife claimed that he was born in England; however, other family members jokingly accused her of being a social climber and said that he was born in Ireland. I wonder if there is a connection between our Hurst family and yours. I was told that the Hurst family were Huguenots. Have you heard anything along this line? Cliff.
