I may not be of much help but a John Porteous from Ruthwell, born about 1770 was my gggrandfather he was married to Isabella Gardener amd had 7 children between 1800 and 1817. namely Ann, Isabella (my great grandmother who married James Mitchell of Nutberry Annan in 1830), James, Janet, Jannet, Margaret and Nicholas. John was a gardner and the family may have come from near Edinburgh. I have no other information.
