    1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] MAXWELL, ELDER & ARMSTRONG Families

    3. Hi everyone, I've been helping a friend with her Scottish ancestry, and over the past couple of days we have made good headway with her MAXXWELL, ELDER and ARMSTRONG families. We'd love to know if there are any other listers researching this particular family line, or if anyone can help with further information regarding them: John MAXWELL & Ellen/Helen MURRAY: Married 1804/5. Thomas MAXWELL and Elizabeth ARMSTRONG: Marriage details not yet found, but probably circa 1842/3. Thomas died 1885 and Elizabeth 1903 at Canonbie. John MAXWELL & Maggie ELDER: married at Canonbie in 1881, and moved to Carlisle prior to the 1891 Census. Maggie's father was the highly respected Hotel Keeper, Alexander ELDER who ran the Cross Keys Hotel for well over 40 years. Alexander Armstrong's mother's maiden name was given as BRISBANE on his death index. Walter ELDER married Margaret BRISBANE but Margaret was definitely not old enough to be Alexander's mother. Had Walter been previously married? Also, Thomas MAXWELL who died in 1885 appears to have died from a broken neck (if my friend is understanding the cause of death correctly), it states he suffered for 8 weeks before his death. Are there any newspaper archives from 1884/5 for the Canonbie area that may have an article giving details of what happened to him? Any help, pointers and/or suggestions would be gratefully received, very best wishes to all, Jon
