Hello List I have located an 1801 baptism that was done at Parkgate for a child of a couple from Dalfible, an area farm. Would there have been a chapel at Parkgate? On the same page of this baptism, it seems that the register was used for several baptisms at different towns..HEATHERMILL, Kirkmichael , Upper Garrel by a travelling minister. Does dalfible Farms still exist? helen
Hi Helen Dalfible does exist. It was the custom for ministers to perform baptisms and marriages at home. Kirkmichael Church is only about a mile from Parkgate but remember, the Minister had a horse. Most of the parishioners had to walk to church, not easy with a new born baby. It was also the custom to baptise as soon as possible after birth, sometimes even on the same day. I think 'Heathermill' is a miss-transcription for Nethermill. Hi Helen, Would you like to have an 1828 old map clip showing Dalfible, Nethermill, and Garrel ?
