I have a Cole/Coll family from Kirkcudbright (originally from Ireland) and this is also a derivative of Nicholas. You can see how this would evolve, especially if it was Gaelic. Incidentally, this same family had a daughter [sic] called Nicholas. Jeanette In an 1820's Scottish record I found the man's given name Caull. I'd never seen it before and from baisc on-line searching I found the case of a living person with the first name Caul, a nickname for Nicholas. Someone has suggested it could derive from Malcolm. Nicholas strikes me as a sensible source for Caull. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
