We are searching for a James Johnston, b. 1755 in the area of Dumfries/Moffatt, Scotland. In an year unknown James left for North America. His future wife, Frances Haley, has been found in Pennsylvania with her parents. It is likely that James was there too. Later, year unknown, James and his wife moved to South Carolina as did the Haley family. During the Revolutionary War James served with the noted General Francis Marion, "the Swamp Fox". Eventually James and his family moved to the Sumter, Georgia, area. James and his wife are well documented in SC and GA; however, it gets a wee bit sketchy before this time. Some years ago a cousin of mine talked with a distant relation who claimed to have letters written by James in which he mentions both Dumfries and Moffatt. Unfortunately James did not mention where he was born. Any help finding our James Johnston, b. 1755 in the Borders will be appreciated. Good hunting, Cliff.
