    1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] HYSLOPS ???

    3. Dear Members, I hope this gets through..thought I had sent it last night! Over a year ago, I appealed to you for help and was blessed with many insights from some very talented guardian angels. I am particularly indebted to an angel in Falkirk but would also like to thank once again, all the others who have helped. Now I need your help again. I have managed to find my great grandmother's relatives and ancestors in Durisdeer and there are many Hyslops I have yet to research. If there is anyone who might be connected to this line, I would love to hear from you. Some places that have popped up in my research include Keir, Morton, Thornhill, Durisdeer, Armadale and Rutherglen, Glasgow Here they are: Robert Hyslop b. 12 June 1792 Married Mary Hyslop b. 1794 Durisdeer (cousins?) They had several children: Margaret (b. 1816), James (b. 1818), John (b. 1820), William (b. 1822), Jane (b. 1826), Robert b. 1828 and Thomas (b. 1832). I have yet to confirm but there may also have been a Charles and others. William (b. 1822) married Margaret Barclay (b. 1836..Location?). They moved to Stoke upon Trent and had two children Mary (b. 1859) and William (b. 1862). When her mother died in 1862, she was sent to Durisdeer and lived with her aunt Margaret (Hyslop) Halliday and her uncle John Hyslop (the 1871 Census shows them at Farthingbank, Durisdeer and Mary is 10). William (b. 1862) was also sent back to Scotland but I have not sorted out the details yet, though he did live with the same aunt and uncle in 1881 and 1891, according to the census information for those years, working as both a labourer and apprentice painter. Mary married Alexander Barrowman and later, Robert Weir Miller. She worked as a flesher (butcher!). She lost a child and two husbands and then came to Canada with two boys. Her brother William joined her with his wife in 1911. Mary is the great grandmother I was looking for as per the message below. Today I was finally able to visit her grave to find a lovely inscription: "She lived to bless mankind". There is more to tell but you all have equally exciting journeys so I will stop here. I am keen to know others researching HYSLOPs and if there are currently any connections in the Dumfries area. Oh, did I mention I am going to be in Scotland in September.imagine!! I hope to visit Keir School, which I understand is now a private residence. Thanks again. Wendy _____ From: Wendy Miller [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: February 18, 2011 6:27 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Researching Miller/Hyslop/Douglas Dear Members, I am a new member and am still in the "bouncing-off-the-wall-this-is-so-exiting" stage of my research I have had in my possession a sampler dated 1873, Mary Hyslop, Keir School and believe this to be my great grandmother born in Keir Dumfriesshire either 1858 or 1860. Mary is the daughter of James Hyslop and Agnes Douglas - based on my research with the LDS and Ancestry sites . I believe she married Robert W. Miller (date?) and had at least 2 children: Robert B. Miller and my grandfather James Halliday Miller. She and James came to Canada abt 1900 or so (can not cite my source just now) and that is why I have her sampler I am having trouble locating some information on her husband. Robert W. Miller who, according to the 1891 Scotland Census, was born in Shotts Lanarkshire He seems to have disappeared, somewhere between 1891 and 1901 Census as the 1901 Scotland Census shows Mary as the head of the household in Rutherglen living on Greenhill Rd and working as a dressmaker, living with her sons Robert and James (G?) Miller. As I mentioned above, I have a source that says she came to Canada in 1900. I found a family tree on Ancestry that confirms Mary Hyslop as the daughter of James and Agnes but shows her as dead in 1879 in London, which I believe is incorrect. If anyone has any insights that could point me in the right direction, I would be most grateful for your help. If there is a preferred way to present information to make it easier to assist me, please let me know. Best, wendymiller _____ No virus found in this message.
