Any lister with links/knowledge of Jane Armstrong Johnstone. B. Annan 1816 (9/4), d/o Dr. George Bell Johnstone, and Jane Carlyle Currie. She d/o Thomas Currie, died India c.1811.
The Presbytery met at Urr on 5th October, 1699. Mr Lyon compeared; and three of the leading men of the parish, George McKairney of Blaiket, William McGeorge in Larg, and Thomas McGeorge in Glenarm, handed in an indictment against him............ Three witnesses, John McGoun in Little Larg, John Hanna in Little Culmain, and Hugh McGeorge in Garmartin, were produced to speak to this charge, but Mr Lyon took exception to all of them. On old woman is still remembered, who lived with her son, and kept a shp, on the spot on which the post-office is now situated. Her name was Jeanie McGeorge, but she was affectionately termed, in accordance with the prevelent custom, Granny McGeorge; and she is said to have attained almost the age of a hundred. Her wisdom and experience were supposed to have enabled her to acquire a minute acquaintance with the healing art, and she was largely consulted on behalf of the sick, for whom she had no hesitation in prescribing medicines and pills. These were taken from the index, I'll check the book for other references that were missed later. As 'Kirkbean Jottings' is now out of print, I wonder if anyone that has a copy could look to see if my family Harris/Herries (sea pilots/ master mariners), James Harris also owned The Criffel, run the Steamboat Inn and had The Shop as a grocery store from Carsethorn, Kirkbean are mentioned in the document. As I'm sure many regulars know, Langholm Archive Society members have been indexing, from microfiche, the 'Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser' - the local paper which was first published in 1848. So far the searchable records are completed and on-line up to 1871. In case this site has passed you by, it's at http://www.langholmarchive.org.uk/ this will take you directly to the search engine, however, using the information link on that page will take you to another page which explains fully the content of the search engine and also its limitations - it's almost essential reading! Having recently entered the surname of Langholm ancestors of mine, I've found out children who died in infancy whom I never knew existed, and discovered all manner of 'social' information about others. Further, Langholm Archive Centre was donated a huge collection of photographs of Eskdale; currently some 1600 have been both scanned and entered into a database (there are 1000s more to do) and there are plans to put these photographs on line in the near future - the website is at present being tested and it is expected that it will 'go live' in the next few weeks. Unfortunately the Archive Centre does not have the means to copy articles from the microfiches, but the 'E & L' microfiches are available in the Ewart Library, Dumfries, and I understand that copies can be made there. Although the 'E & L' serves Eskdale and Liddesdale, it had a fairly wide coverage and it may be worthwhile popping in your query into the search engine. Should the site help you in any way, I would be delighted to report back to the 'skelly-eyed' volunteer microfiche readers of any success stories! Bruce Langholm
Hi Trudy, I also have the booklet you mention. Alf Truckell (A.E.Truckell) used to be given his midday meal by my granmother! My dad's family lived right next door to the Kirkbean school. Dad (David McCrone) was born in Kirkbean, and other generations were born in Colvend, and Mainsriddell. Sadly Alf died a few years ago. He was a wealth of iinformation, was a museum curator for his working life and was a very well respected scholar of ancient Scots language. My GGGrandfather on this side was William McCrone, and he had an illegitmate son with Jean/Jane Herries/Harris born in 1925 in Mainsriddell. Dad's notes tell me that she was born in Kirkgunzeon in 1973. Jean had no other children, lived with her son David McCrone and his wife and family in Kirkbean, until her death in 1879 in Kirkbean. Because there was no marriage cert to find, I now have Ian McClumpha (from the Dumfries and Galloway FH Society) researching this branch. Have you been in touch with this FH society? They have a booklet written by my dad titled 'Jottings'. There may be something of use to you in this. Apparently there are many Herries' graves in the Creswick cemetary. We MUST be connected somewhere. I am in Melbourne Australia, but spent my holidays in Kirkbean when we lived in England. Ian does research on a commercial basis on his own behalf --- not on behalf of the Society. Irene
I have recently purchased a booklet entitled "Kirkbean Parish and Kirk" by A.E. Truckell, Walter Duncan and Rev. Thomas Scott. This was published in 1976 by the Kirk Session to mark the bi-centenary of the building. It contains a short history of the parish and the church. I have an electronic copy on PDF format if anyone would like a copy please get in touch. I am researching the history of the Harris/Herries family from Carsethorn and would welcome any information anyone has about them or about village life. Trudy Trudy Mitchell sandy.mitchell@mac.com
