    1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] Andrew Blacklock, b.abt 1781 DFS
    2. Barbara Brown Allen
    3. Hello List: Can someone confirm the marriage of Andrew Blacklock to Janet Waugh? I have found Andrew only in the 1841 SCT census where he is at Dryfesdale with a James Blacklock, age 20, and the James Sanders family. The wife of James Sanders is Margaret. After further investigation, their son Thomas Sanders is Thomas Blacklock Sanders, b. 1 Aug 1837. Thomas B. Sanders later appears in the 1851 census of Galt, Ont., and on 18 Mar 1864 he marries Annie Ross at Waterloo, Ont. Their marriage license names James Sanders and Margaret as his parents. Back to Andrew: I have him with two children, John Blacklock and Margaret Blacklock. Thanks for any help, Barbara Dearborn, Michigan USA _________________________________________________ "Second star to the right . . . straight on 'til morning." -- J.M. Barrie

    3. As the list parameters are now set, if you receive a message from a member through the list and you use your 'reply to' button, your answer will go only to the member who sent the message, and not to all the list members. If you use your 'reply to all' button the message goes to the sender and to all list members. In this case, the message will be archived on the Rootsweb servers and will be available to all future listers. I am of the opinion that the 'reply to all' method is best. However, the choice is yours. Tom Welch, Admin.

    3. Hi Brian, In 1410 I expect that the entry may be French not English. After 1066, French was the oficial language in England for several hundred years. In French Sr is an abbreviation for the title Seigneur. I gather that it refers to a sort of minor nobility - but not 100% sure. Neil Perth, Oz > Hello List. Can anyone help with the meaning of the letters Sr. entered in front of someone's name in what I take to be a printout from a 1410 O.P.R .from a Church in Yorkshire. I can't believe that it is either Sir or Snr as I have never seen Sir abbreviated or Snr likewise or in front of a name. There might be a simple explanation, I just don't know. > > Regards to all. > > Brian Rae in Orkney. > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] Robison/Sharpe(e) Research
    2. Pam Eaton
    3. Hi to clever Researchers, I guess every Researcher has a particular ancestor who "niggles" away for decades. I have one, my g.g. grandfather William Robison. William Robison born abt. 1812 Kirkcudbright (parents unknown to date) has been a "challenge" for years. I have been unsuccessful finding his baptism, birth, or marriage to Elizabeth Sharp(e) of Dumfriesshire. Fortunately I have traced him (& subsequent expanding family) through Census Records from 1841 as Robeen (sic) in Urr, 1851 Buittle and so forth. His wife Elizabeth Sharp(e) ancestry is traced back many generations. She died 16 Feb 1885 and is buried at Lockerbie Garden of Remembrance and I have been priviliged to visit her grave twice. From Elizabeth's headstone, it is inscribed that her husband William Robison died at Allison's Bank Bar. FINALLY, I found his Death - in England. He was working as a Toll Keeper (Allison's Bank- near Gretna?), was injured and died as a result ... at Carlisle Hospital on 22.11.1868. He is not buried at the Carlisle Cemetery but I have been informed that he may be buried at a small cemetery in the vicinity of the border - perhaps Arthuret, near Longtown or suchlike. His legacy continues in my case: -- In 1876, my great grandfather John Robison married Margaret Paterson/Patterson at Lochmaben and emigrated to Queensland, Australia. I have many photographs of the Robison/Sharpe family and Patterson/Armstrong family taken in Scotland and would love to positively identify them and share with anyone connected. From the photos, I do believe that one of William and Elizabeth's son emigrated to United States. Also "a" son of James Patterson and Mary Armstrong emigrated to New Zealand. In conclusion, DOES ANYONE KNOW THE BIRTHRIGHT OF WILLIAM ROBISON AT KIRKCUDBRIGHT? SIMILARLY, ANY KNOWLEDGE OF HIS BURIAL PLACE? ANY INFORMATION WITH REGARDS TO ANY CONNECTION WOULD BE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED. Pam Eaton (Australia). _________________________________________________________________ Time for change? 3. Have just checked the Times online and there isnt much on Allison's Bank, but what there is suggests it was indeed in Gretna Parish and also that marriages were conducted in the Tollhouse. There was a court case in 1910 referring to one of these marriages, in 1851, and it was stated that there still existed 15 books which had been kept at the Tollhouse by the Murray family, and that the books contained details of 8,000 marriages. I have been through the original file and removed all "Research notes" as they cannot be excluded it seems, (FTM says)? Although I am including the entire tree and have unchecked all options when I open the new Gedcom I note all previous notes have now moved from Person notes to Research notes and are definitely still all there. Can anyone shed any light on what I can do please.. I just don't want to include all my notes and comments when sharing the tree? Cheers Aye Jim Patterson-Brewin Canada. 3. This from the Making of the Modern World (a gale database) The East-India register and directory, for 1815; corrected to the 17th November, 1814; containing complete lists of the company’s servants, civil, military, and marine, with their respective appointments at the different presidencies in the East-Indies; with indexes to the same, and lists of casualties during the last year. Together with lists of the Europeans, mariners, &c. not in the service of the East-India Company; and merchant vessels employed in the country trade. Compiled, by permission of the honorable the East- India Company, from the official returns received at the East-India House: by J. Mathison, A. W. Mason, & J. S. Kingston London, Printed by Cox and Baylis, [1815] Under Medical Establishment. Bombay. Assistant Surgeons: Names-Dates of Appt-Remarks George Johnstone 4 Nov On furlough. The names are arranged in date sequence and George is down as appointed in 1809. The same info appears in the next edition (ie 1816 corrected to 1815). I could not find him in 1819 directories and there dont seem to be any for 1817l. From another volume I discovered that he would have needed to be at least 20 on appointment and prerequisites for service included a diploma from one of a list of institutions which included the College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Assuming Assistant Surgeons had the same furlough as other employees and officers, George's furlough would have been 3 years. He is listed as on furlough in another 1814 directory but confusingly that is only corrected to Sep 1814. Anyway if this is your guy I suppose he should have gone back to the subcontinent in around 1817 or 1818 and done another stint, but I can find no further sign of him. Judy

    3. Hi Folks The Edinburgh Medical Graduates list (and other graduates) is published on fiche. I have had a look (1780-1820), but have failed to find George Bell Johnstone. The list is by year of graduation and give the name (not always alphabetical), country of origin and title of thesis - all translated into Latin and not indexed, so I might have missed him. Perhaps more information might be obtained from the records of the two Royal Colleges in Edinburgh - surgeons and physicions - one of which he is likely to have joined. The Wellcome Foundation library (in London) has a comprehensive room for biographical details. Also the records of the East india Company (British Library, London) are likely to be fruitful. I suspect you are too early for the Medical Register and the Medical Directory.
