    2. Martin Graham
    3. Fascinating. Now I know that the spelling changed I am making real progress. Thank you. In case anyone else is interested in the minutiae: BARNGLIES (no "H") (OS landranger sheet 85 GR 328 777) is North of Gretna and West of CANONBIE, up the road from BOGRA, BOGRIE and "TOWER of SARK". BARNGLIESHEAD lies a little further North. 1925 On the OS popular edition map the same place is BARNGLEISH. 1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] Scottish / English name equivalents
    2. jose.jones
    3. I was doing so well but now have a glitch! As Jessie is to Janet, Beth/Bessie is to Elizabeth, is James a similar equivalent to John? My family mainly originated in Dumfries and Galloway with some popping over the border to Carlisle to marry. My parents were second cousins before they married and I thought I had established the connections. However, yesterday I came across a cross border link and discovered that my JAMES JOHNSTON was actually JOHN JOHNSTON according to his daughter's English marriage certificate (August 1900). Although she worked (as a hat maker) in Carlisle she was born in Scotland and I had always presumed her father to have been Scottish. Could he have been called James in Scotland, even though he was referred to as John when he witnessed his daughter's marriage in England?

    3. Today I received a wonderful photo taken in a small graveyard in Kirkton, Kirkmahoe, showing the family of my ggggrandfather Thomas Sharp and his wife Mary McLellan. Surprisingly the top of the headstone has a very detailed Star of David carved into it. What does this signify? Simply a religious relic, a sign of God, or Judaism? Any help would be appreciated. Parents names are John White and Barbara Stewart. He was adopted by a Lady Agnew (could be Agnes) Her son Nathaniel is also mentioned. Can any one tell me where to start looking for information. 3. The age could be 50, or 5 something. The census recorder had a heavy hand, but I think Rothesay is pretty clear. Most of the females on the page had a X over their ages, I guess indicating they were counted? Steve.

    3. Hi Les, Have you had a look on Scotlandspeople? I have found ancestry.com good for census, but they do not have images of the Scotland census. Anyway, I had a look on Scotlandspeople ( I have a few credits left which are due to expire shortly). The 1871 Census of Scotland shows a William Johnston, draper, aged 50, living in Dalry, Ayr. His place of birth is Lanarkshire, Glasgow. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in Buteshire, Rothesay. Her age is not clear as it is crossed over. Regards, Steve.

    3. that's very interesting. can you see how 'Rothesay' could turn into "Ketting"? The line over the age could explain how Elizabeth failed to get any older in 20 years. Could the first figure be a 5? Judy snip > > The 1871 Census of Scotland shows a William Johnston, draper, aged 50, > living in Dalry, Ayr. 1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] Allisons Bank Toll Bar and ARTHURET MIs
    2. Martin Graham
    3. ALLISONS BANK TOLL BAR is on the Scottish bank of the River Sark. On the English bank is the Sark Bank Hotel (now The Gretna Chase Hotel) built to catch the "illegal" wedding trade. The Toll Bar was also known as SARK BANK TOLL. Crossing from England into Scotland on the old Gretna Road (from Carlisle) it is the first house on the right and is now in a rather sorry state at the entrance to a camping and caravan site.Marriage records are housed in a solicitors office in Carlisle. For listers who know Gretna this is not the old blacksmiths shop (at Gretna Green) of the modern tourist trade. There is a useful article on Allisons Bank at: http://www.britishancestry.org/articles.php?year=2003&month=7&id=6 Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser Index from 1848 onwards http://www.langholmarchive.org.uk/ (previous post) may produce some interesting results. I found a marriage (not a Gretna marriage) George Graham, farmer, Cubbyhill to Miss Jane Murray, 2nd daughter of John Murray, Sark Tollbar Rev H Hodgeson, Kirkandrews on Esk ARTHURET is the huge and beautiful church and graveyard close to Longtown, Cumbria. (Just South of the English (Cumberland) Scottish (Dumfriesshire) border at Scotsdike) The Cumbria FHS has recently published a CD of Arthuret MIs (more than 6,400 individuals on more than 1900 graves dating from 1654.) Many of the transcriptions are illuminated by additional information from local newspapers and other sources. There is also a transcript of the burial registers from 1838-1930. Due its size (over 700 pages) it is available as CD (PDF format) only. (£10 by post). Cumbria FHS members can find an article about the publication in the CFHS newsletter no. 129 dated Nov 2008, pgs 24 & 25. Information is also in the publications section on the CFHS website http://cumbriafhs.com/ (This paragraph is not a commercial promotion - I am simply a very grateful recipient of the fascinating data in this huge piece of work.) Martin - Dorset, England ----- Original Message ----- William Robison died at Allison's Bank Bar. FINALLY, I found his Death - in England. He was working as a Toll Keeper (Allison's Bank- near Gretna?), was injured and died as a result ... at Carlisle Hospital on 22.11.1868. He is not buried at the Carlisle Cemetery but I have been informed that he may be buried at a small cemetery in the vicinity of the border - perhaps Arthuret, near Longtown or suchlike.

    2. Les Hewett
    3. All I have is an ancestry.com transcription of the 1871 census, Dalry, for William Johnston, draper, and wife Elizabeth nee Kenyon. If clearly shows Ketting, Buteshire, which of course could be the transcriber's error. One suggestion has been that it could be the name of a house or estate? Nothing like it in Genuki and the many responses to date. Thanks to all for your efforts. Les H., Napier, NZ.

    1. Re: [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] KETTING, Bute

    3. I'm going to bet that it is in fact Rothesay. Just in case anyone thinks I have gone completely mad, I found the family in 1851 and 1861 (in Kilmarnock) where Elizabeth's POB is down as Rethury and Rothesay. Elizabeths age dots around a bit but I think its the same family. there is also a James Kenyon born 1809 who moves to Ayrshire from Bute and seems to come from Rothesay too, Now the pen test. try an ornate 19thc R beginning with a pronounced downstroke before the loop - easily mistaken for K. Then the TH interpreted as double T, followed by some scribbled lower case letters and ending in the y - easy to mix up with g. So whilst it might seem really extreme to suggest that Rothesay could end up as Ketting, its quite feasible, especially with Ancestry's rather sloppy transcriptions.
