Looking for information related to James and Elizabeth (Stoddard) Ballentine, parents of William Ballentine.  William was born abt. 1826-1828 Dunfrieshire Scotland.  Elizabeth died when William was a very small boy.  He went to live with his grandfather (name unknown) until age ten, then lived with a Mrs. Carson in the sheep raising area of the Scoittish Hills until age 15.  He then becomed apprenticed to a Blacksmith shop (location unknown) until he could save enough money for passage to America.  He sailed for America in 1847. Would very much appreciate any help with information on his parents, grandparents, Mrs. Carson, etc. Thanks, Jo Ann ------------------------------ To contact the DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY list administrator, send an email to DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY-admin@rootsweb.com. 3. Hi Norma I want to caution you about making the dangerous assumption that Thomas's birth must be one of the ones available on Scotland's people. I have been working for many years on a informal one name study of Beattie's from the border counties. It started by me trying to determine the parents of my William Beattie. In the course of my study I obtained all the christening and marriages from the OPR's which I then merged together into families. After that I filled out those families further using Monumental inscriptions, census records and any other records I could find. It soon became apparent that there were a lot more Beattie's out there than the ones that could be found in the OPR's. For frame you are interested for Dumfries barely half of the individuals are listed on a christening record. The earlier you get the less chance you have of finding them. If they were from Roxburgh or Selkirk your chances are likely about 20%. Maybe you will be lucky and yours is one of the ones that is listed but it is far from a guarantee. I have never been able to determine to my satisfaction who the parents of my William Beattie are. Good luck Sheila I Hale On 3/22/2010 4:55 AM, norma holland wrote: > Hi there folks, > > > > > > Can anyone help with my Anderson ancestors. > the furthest I have got back is Thomas Anderson who died in Kirpatrick Juxta > in 1838 aged 78 married to Catherine Marchbankof Kirkpatrick Juxta. 3. Hi there folks, Can anyone help with my Anderson ancestors. the furthest I have got back is Thomas Anderson who died in Kirpatrick Juxta in 1838 aged 78 married to Catherine Marchbankof Kirkpatrick Juxta. When their first child was born he was a miller at Archbank near Moffat then he farmed at Wester Earshaig in Kirpatrick Juxta until his death. I'm not sure how to find the correct birth. The closest in the county is 1763 in Eskdalemuir with a father James (his first son was called James so I guess this would be a good sign!). There are 2 others within +- 5yrs (Scotland's People). I suspect the Eskdalemuir one is the correct one but don't know how I could verify this.... Also, I thought maybe a miller might move there from some other mill further away. Anyone got any thoughts? cheers Norma

    1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] Re HEWATSEN and The wreck of Brig GOOD INTENT 1815
    2. Tricia and Trevor Steer
    3. 1815 The brig "GOOD INTENT" of Maryport, a collier, (HEWAT, master) It was wrecked about 2 miles east of the mouth of the River Dee The ship was totally lost and 3 men drowned I am searching for details of this shipwreck. The only listing I have found states that 3 men were lost. No other details. I really would like some advice please, as to how I can find the names of these 3 men. I have seen a will dated 1826 for a William HEWATSEN, part owner of the Good Intent. He leaves 10 pounds to his grandson William, son of his dead son William. I'm wondering whether that dead son was one of the shipwreck victims. My Gt Gt Grandmother was Agnes GUTHRIE, nee Agnes HEWETSON who died in Australia in 1899. She was supposedly born in Troon in 1826, but I can find no record of her birth. Her death certificate states that her father was William HEWITSON, Master Mariner and her Mother Agnes McEWAN. Other known variations of this family's surname are HEWATSON, HEWITSON, HOWATSON. I really have hit a brick wall with this family. I will be very grateful for any help. Tricia In very wet Queensland

    1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] GIBSON and CARRUTHERS
    2. Pat Wade
    3. Hi, I would love to find descendents of Thomas GIBSON and Isabella CARRUTHERS. They were both born in Lochmaben - Thomas in 1804 and I believe Isabella in 1797. Thomas was with the Royal Artillery and their children were born all over the place but a number in Woolwich, Kent. Other that their births they do not appear to have returned to Dumfries but their parents were there - all of which I need to confirm. Thomas I believe was the son of Robert GIBSON and Catherine LAIDLAW and Isabella the daughter of Francis CARRUTHERS and Jean RICHARDSON. I am not certain of her parents. Their marriage entry states "GIBSON - Ths Gibson Royal Artillery and Isabella Carruthers St Georges Parish dau. Late Francis Carruthers farmer Dumfries Shire - No objections" But if you were to look at the names of the children (and not the usual naming pattern) - the children were - Thomas, Isabella (parents names) then Robert, Catherine, Robert (his parents names) then Charlotte, George, Margaret, Sophia, James - none of which match for her parents. Thank you Regards, Pat Wade (Nee King) Melb, Vic
