    3. List,       I found the info below, and am wondering if anyone knows the where abouts of Brigholm & Northfield, and any identifying info about Robert Johnstone of Newbie, and William Maxwell of Kirkhouse.       Also, does anyone know anything about King's Chaplains & Scotch Bishops?   Thanks,   Marc Archer   The Historical Families of Dunfriesshire and the Border Wars CHAPTER IX   The Kirk land of Kirkpatrick-Fleming which had belonged to Robert Johnstone of Newbie was conferred on William Maxwell of Kirkhouse by a royal charter dated Whitehall, Jan. 10, 1607; and Brigholme and Northfield, the property of the same Laird, were sold by his son Robert, in 1610, to Mr Patrick Howat, one of the King’s chaplains, afterwards a Scotch Bishop.

    3. If you go on to the NLS map link to this 1912 Ordnance Survey map and follow the main road east from Bellshill to where is crosses the Caledonian Railway - you will find Newhouse Smithy - Newhouse Farm is not identified but this is where it would have been. http://www.nls.uk/maps/os/view/?sid=74488695 Iain ----- Original Message ----- From: <njs827@aol.com> To: <driegel38@yahoo.com> Cc: <DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 21, 2010 9:22 PM Subject: [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] Fwd: Scott - Pollock > > > Dorothy, > If you inspect the death register for John SCOTT, you will find that Iain > was exactly correct. 3. This may just be coincidence because there are undoubtedly a few Holytowns about, while the name Newhouse is not exactly novel. However there is a Holytown a little to the east of Bellshill in Lanarkshire, and a little bit further east is Newhouse which now has an industrial estate and is beside the M8 motorway. This might be the location of your Newhouse Farm, Holytown. Then again, it might not. 2. Dorothy, If you inspect the death register for John SCOTT, you will find that Iain was exactly correct. It records John as a farmer, spouse to Mary Richard POLLOCK, who was found dead on 10 Feb 1914 at Newhouse Farm, Newhouse, District of Holytown in the County of Lanark. His parents are recorded as John SCOTT (farmer, deceased) and Elizabeth Scott (Maiden Surname BAIRD, deceased). 3. Hi This site might be worth a look. The Galloway Association of Glasgow was formed over 200 years ago and was originally known as the Glasgow Galloway Brotherly Society. *“A number of people in and about Glasgow connected with Galloway comprehending the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright and the Shire of Wigtown, by extraction, marriage or residence after several meetings, and mature deliberation on the subject, Did, in order to raise and support a fund for their mutual benefit and advantage, agree and resolve, upon the 22nd day of August 1791 to form and accordingly did form themselves into a facility under the name and designation of The Glasgow Galloway Brotherly Society ...”* Recently an album of photographs of past presidents has been found and the images have been uploaded onto the web. The Association would be pleased to hear from anyone with any information on them. http://www.gallowayassoc.org.uk/page25.htm Irene

    3. There is a birth record in the index on Scotlandspeople for an Alexander Panton Douglas b in 1857. If you go to that site you can pay to view and download the registration. Parish of Urquhart in Moray, sometimes referred to as Elgin. Here are some census indexing from Ancestry: 1861 Scotland Census Name: James Douglas Age: 43 Estimated birth year: abt 1818 Relationship: Head Spouse's name : Jessie Gender: Male Where born: Dallas, Moray Registration Number: 144 Registration district: Urquhart Civil parish: Urquhart County: Moray Address: Private House Occupation: Flesher ED: 1 Household schedule number: 44 Line: 1 Roll: CSSCT1861_20 Household Members: Name Age James Douglas 43 Jessie Douglas 38 Jane Douglas 9 John Douglas 7 Henry Douglas 6 Joanna Douglas 5 Alexander Douglas 4 James Douglas 2 Jessie Douglas 1 Source Citation: Parish: Urquhart; ED: 1; Page: 8; Line: 1; Roll CSSCT1861_20; Year: 1861. Part of the trip involved following up for our family tree, the history of Sir Walter Scott's character 'Old Mortality'. We have just received a series of notes which gave us the final clue as to his burial place, unfortunately too late for us to visit. 'Old Mort' was a direct-line ancestor, one Robert Paterson, who died in 1801 and is buried in Caerlaverock Churchyard. He spent 35 years of his life cleaning and making sure that the gravestones of the Covenanters martyrs would not be forgotten, such was his faith in their cause. A. E. He also mentions "....and it was (Sir Walter) Scott who erected the tombstone to Paterson that can still be seen in Caerlaverock Churchyard today" This would be literally the last piece of the jig-saw for us on the life and times of Robert Paterson. We have accumulated a very large data-base on not only Robert but also all the descendants (including Nathaniel Paterson his grandson who was ordained in Galashiels in 1824) and then all the way down to the present family in New Zealand. Is there anyone in the Dumfries area who may be close enough to the Caerlaverock Churchyard and who may know of this tombstone who would be willing to take a digital photo of same for us and email the image to us in New Zealand ? 1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] 'Walter Scott's 'Old Mortality' Caerlaverock Churchyard
    2. Dave and Anna Whitehouse
    3. Greetings listers., My wife and I have just returned from a 3 month holiday in the UK. A. E. Truckell, MBE., MA Edin. in 1975 wrote at length on the 'Old Mortality' statuary group in Dumfries Museum. I can assure you our cup would runneth over in delight.. Kind regards Dave and Anna (Paterson) Whitehouse Warkworth, New Zealand
