    1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] re Elizabeth Mary WILSON
    2. Judith Dumbrell
    3. Hello there, I've just joined this list and wondering if anyone out there knows anything about Elizabeth. According to several census records, she was born in Wigton, Scotland about mid 1860s and her father was Andrew Wilson, a Book Agent or Traveller. She was married in Leeds in 1888 and eventually died there in 1943. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me about her birth date or parents. Hope someone can help regards Judy in Australia

    3. To all the wonderful listers who contacted me please know you are the best and I am most grateful for your considerable help and suggestions one and all:-) Happy Hunting Jim -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jim Patterson Sent: Monday, May 02, 2011 10:10 AM To: Wigtownshire Roots Web list; Dumfries-Galloway rootsweb list Subject: [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] SKS, Need help of Experienced Researcher please? Hello All, Jim Patterson in Western Canada connecting, I am in need of some experienced advice and guidance that is unrelated to our Wigs or Dumfries lists as I have a situation in England with a relative (first Cousin once removed) that is causing me heartachesJ My cousin was born in 1945 near the end of the war in an English southerly village, sadly his mother my Gt Aunt died in the process due to complications. It was my Gt Aunts slightly older sister who helped in the birth as there were no doctors available at that time and location due to wartime. At the time just before the birth my Gt Aunt had run away from her husband as he was not a "good man", and was continuing with a long term extra marital affair for more that 3 years prior to the birth of his son. After the death my Gt Aunt was buried in Gloucestershire where the husband was from and birth family. The son survived and was raised by my Gt Aunt who attended the birth for his first 20-24 months and then out of the blue the father arrived one day with his new wife on his arm and took his son away who was never heard of again by close kin. The Boy found out when age 9 that his birth mum had died and the only Mum he knew was his step Mum.. The son only had the small birth record all his life so on my advice purchased a full birth certificate which showed he was born in a Gloucestershire Hospital close to where his Dad lived. I have told my cousin to get a Death certificate for his Mum which should show the place of death but as the father had much to hide may have registered the birth and death as he wanted them to be? As there was no Doctor present I would assume a Doctor would be called to write the death certificate and a Coroner's report would be required after a PM, so there would be a Coroner's report somewhere? This boy sadly was not looked after and was like his Mum also subject to the reason his birth mum fled and upon the death bed of his step Mum she said you weren't wanted and were not my child so are not in my will. With this info in mind I want to do everything I can to help this cousin find the truth and have reconnected him to his birth family now and all is well but I was not ready to give up quite yetJ I traced my Gt Aunts oldest and best friend who is still alive at 90 and very bright. The friend confirmed the birth where our kin said it occurred and not in the hospital as the certificate suggests. Confirmed her friend had to flee due to a very abusive situation. Confirmed burial in Gloucestershire of my Gt Aunt. Confirmed where my Cousin was born as well as she was in close contact with her best friend until the day she fled. Now, if anyone has advice as to how I can prove the birth occurred in Bristol rather that Gloucestershire as per the certificate and any other guidance or advice all will be greatly appreciated one and allJ I am most grateful that you read this request and thank you all for any leads, snippets of info you may suggestJ Cheers Aye Jim Patterson ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message No virus found in this incoming message. I did just find some info that I may get something out of it have written to The Scottish Genealogy Society as it looks as if they have a set of papers which I found googling Graham and Hallheaths Dumfries GRAHAM 3 DFS. 1763-1948+ T C 43 pages Dealing with the family in Lochmaben and the Grahams of Broomhill and Halleaths. also found this about Limekilns....... what caught my eye was the 1790 birth of a Philadelphia Ann at a time when my Philadelphia known also as Phillis or Phillie and her daughter Ann would have been living on this Farm /Estate 784. JAMES LAWRIE, licensed by Presbytery of Penpont, 5th Aug. 1778; presented by George III. in February, and ordained 2nd September 1784; died 26th March 1799, in his 47th year. 3. I am trying to find my GGG Grandparents death details. They are William Moffat and Christian Moffat(nee Fraser) William was born in Annan -1772 and Christian Fraser was born Annan - 1777. They were married September 1796 - Annan. Their son James Moffat died 10 May 1857 - in lodgings, in Annan. In his death details, it says William & Christian were both deceased. So, all I know they died before 1857. William Moffat was a blacksmith in Annan. I am also trying to establish James Moffat's wife. I only know he was a widower in 1857. They had a son, John Moffat, as he was present at his father's death. I seem to have hit a brick wall so, any information would be very much appreciated. Regards, Margaret

I have baptisms for Barbara Graham 16 Nov 1779 parents John Graham & Philadelphia Rodick in "Roberthill" Drysedale Dumfries Anne Graham 2 Mar 1783 parents John Graham & Phillis Roddic in "Limekilns " Annan Dumfries William Graham 16 Aug 1794 says to John Graham & Philie Rodock in "Hallheaths" Lochmaben John Graham was noted as a Farmer on his other 2 daughters deaths Phillis & Euphemia b in Troqueer according to Census but no births found Does anyone know whether those places are farms or estates ? regards lesley in Tasmania I found this about Hallheaths http://www.robertburns.org/encyclopedia/RiddellWalter1764-1802.748.shtml The Walter Riddells moved to Tinwald House, between Dumfries and Lochmaben. In May 1795, they moved again, to the smaller house of Hallheaths, on the eastward side of Lochmaben. They were there when Burns died. By the spring of 1795, they had so far become friendly again for Burns to send her Reid's miniature on loan. By now, Maria was living, much more humbly, at Tinwald House, between Dumfries and Lochmaben. For, on her husband's return from the West Indies without the balance of the purchase money, Woodley Park had been repossessed by its former owner. In May, the Walter Riddells moved again, to Hallheaths on the eastern side of Lochmaben. From there, Maria wrote to Burns asking his advice about getting a job for a protege of hers. By the late summer, she was again sending her verses for Burns's criticism. In October and November 1795, Burns told her of 'severe domestic rnisfortune' — the death of his daughter Elizabeth. He added: 'I am much correspondence in your debt: I shall pay it soon.'

    3. Yet another query that was afforded me by the 1911 census... My g'grandfather Thomas Boyd Mcdonald and his 4 children lived at 57 Hall Road. He was an Estate Worker at the time of the 1911 census as he had been in prior census' and, in 1909 as per family documentation. In the earlier census he was Ag Laborer and, in 1909 was listed as Motor Car driver on a family birth certificate (assumedly on the same estate?). My question is, if anyone is familiar with the area, at what Estate could he have been employed? Any tidbit of info would be greatly appreciated! Mary A. Paladin; Pennsylvania, USA

    1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] Local Knowledge help Roddick/ Graham
    2. Lesley Fiedler
    3. Hi I have just found a couple more of my Roddick line that I have been chipping away at would appreciate if anyone has local street knowledge or grave stone memorial's on Grahams I was going through all Roddicks births on Old Scottish Church records CD and noticed a Phillis Roddick which caught my eye she had a husband John Graham noted as a Phillis /Philadelphia / Philie Roddic & John Graham children ....they moved around the district a fair bit so its hard to pinpoint origins there are possibly more children its a 30 year timespan that children are born over and may only find out from gravestones .................also perhaps I am wrong about all being the same family ?? but don't think that more than one Phillis Roddick & John Graham was about Barbara Graham 16 Nov 1779 Drysedale Ann Graham 2 Mar 1783 Annan Dumfries William Graham 16 Aug 1794 Lochmaben Have not been able to find anything concrete yet on them but as My GGG Grandad had 2 of his daughters named Phillis & Euphemia Roddick they also never married lived in Dumfries both were teachers I took a punt and searched in English Census for a Phillis Graham as its an unusual name in Dumfries and found Phillis Graham in England as a FS 1841 and Nurse 1851 Phillis Graham b 1802 Troqueer Kirkudbright died age 81 1880 4 Bridge Street Dumfries (needlewoman) & Euphemia Graham b 1809 died age 80 1889 at 2 Ainslie Terrace Dumfries (Housekeeper) I got the 2 death certs which confirms daughters of John Graham a farmer & Phillis Roddick the surname for mother on Euphemias is not readable but does not look like Roddick the informant was Ann Hanna niece she could be daughter of sister Barbara ? (This sometimes happens that informant gives wrong name ) neither girls married the address on Scottish census 1881 is 4 Bridge Street Dumfries I had a look at google maps and it shows the Brig Inn which is no 5 ( according to a web search) and opposite a row of cottages only one has number on it no 3 the cottage that could be no 4 ( the numbers don't seem to work as ours do odds one side and evens the other ) is the one in the middle and interestingly is named REDDICK COTTAGE it looks as if this is actually Brydekirk from street signs and not Dumfries township so am I wrong in thinking this is the Bridge Street Dumfries? FHL Film 0224047 GRO Ref Volume 821 EnumDist 5 Page 22 1871 Census they were both living together at 72 English Street Dumfries noted as Dressmakers I have not found Euphemia prior to 1871 I can find nothing in Memorials of St Michaels, no wills ,no Kirk sessions there are so many John and William Grahams I am hoping that maybe someone will recognise the names above I have added as much as poss on them as may be useful to someone else regards lesley in Tasmania

    3. Hi Mary, Capelgill Farm is definitely still there, there is row of cottages nearby but I couldn't say which one is actually your shepherds cottage. I have walked the hills in that area many times.  I probably have numerous photographs of the farm taken from the roadside  where we park and the hills around.  I'll look out some if you would like to have them. I used to have a website showing the farm.   In the meantime have a look at a page from my walking pals website http://www.walkscotland.plus.com/Borders/pages/sadlY1a.htm  The map shows the location of the farm and below the map there is small photo looking down on the farm from the hill Saddle Yoke taken during one of our many ascents.  hope to go back their and walk up Blackhope below Hartfell -- not fit enough to scale Saddle Yoke these days. Hi Lesley: A bit of what you would find if you purchase the full records: England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations),1861-1941 Record for Robert Donaldson Dickson England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations),1861-1941: 4 June The Confirmation of the Commissariot of Dumfries dated 30 May 1874 of Joseph Dickson, Printer & Publisher, of Loreburn Street, Dumfries, & Mrs. Isabella Dickson or Easton of 58 English Street, Dumfries, Widow, as Executors Dative qua Next of Kin of Robert Donaldson Dickson, Dumfries, Sailor, who latterly sailed in the Merchant Ship "Kalamazoo" trading between England and America, who was drowned near New Orleans about the beginning of 1847.(---the entry does say 1847 instead of 1874, perhaps the person who did the transcription mixed up his birth and death years?) So I started looking for Mrs. Isabella Dickson or Easton and found: 1861 Scotland Census Name: Walter Easton Age: 44 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1817 Relationship: Head Spouse's name : Isabella Easton Gender: Male Where born: Dumfries, Dumfriesshire Registration Number: 821 Registration district: Dumfries Civil parish: Dumfries St Mary County: Dumfriesshire Address: 60 Pleasance ED: 13 Household schedule number: 60 Page: 11 Line: 11 Roll: CSSCT1861_143 Household Members: Name Age Walter Easton Head 44 Married born Dumfries, Dfs Occupation: Printer & Publisher Dumfries & Galloway Standard News Paper Isabella Easton Wife 48 married born Carlaverock, Dumfriesshire Scotland Deaths: 1862 EASTON WALTER M DUMFRIES /DUMFRIES 821/00 0261 Walter Easton, Printer & Publisher, married to Isabella Dickson, died at ____ Close, High Street, Dumfries on August 8, 1862, age 47 years, cause is hard to read, informant is John Dickson, ______??, Dumfries (I think), Nephew, present. Box for names of parents is blank. I can send you the original if you want it. I think that the Walter _____ on Samuel's death reg, brother-in-law, is Walter Easton, not Walter C____. Try the Glasgow or Dumfries newspapers for obits for Walter, and perhaps Samuel, since Walter was a newspaper printer & publisher, there was likely an obit somewhere. Check cemetery transcripts for his burial and Isabella's. I couldn't find her death reg. 1851 Scotland Census Name: Robert Dickson Age: 3 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1848 Relationship: Son Father's Name: Samuel Dickson Mother's Name: Ann Dickson Gender: Male Where born: Town, Dumfries Parish Number: 821 Civil parish: Dumfries Town: Dumfries County: Dumfriesshire Address: Queen Street ED: 13 Page: 2 (click to see others on page) Household schedule number: 2/3 Line: 5 Roll: CSSCT1851_206 Household Members: Name Age Samuel Dickson 38 Ann Dickson 33 Robert Dickson 3 James Dickson 1 Ann Barber 19 1861 Scotland Census Robt Dickson Age: 14 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1847 Relationship: Son Mother's Name: Ann Dickson Gender: Male Where born: Dumfries Registration Number: 821 Registration district: Dumfries Civil parish: Dumfries St Mary Town: Dumfries County: Dumfriesshire Address: High Street Occupation: Steampacket Clerk ED: 10 Household schedule number: 66 Line: 2 Roll: CSSCT1861_143 Household Members: Name Age Ann Dickson 43 Robt Dickson 14 Ann Dickson 10 Joseph Dickson 8 William Dickson 5 Thomas Dickson 2 1871 Scotland Census Name: Robert Dickson Age: 24 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1847 Relationship: Son Mother's Name: Annie Dickson Gender: Male Where born: Dumfries, Dumfries Registration Number: 821/1 Registration district: Dumfries Burgh Civil parish: Dumfries Town: Dumfries County: Dumfriesshire Address: 26 High St (close) Occupation: Sailer ED: 12 Household schedule number: 74 Line: 19 Roll: CSSCT1871_183 Household Members: Name Age Annie Dickson 51 Robert Dickson 24 Annie Dickson 19 Joseph Dickson 18 William Dickson 14 Thomas Dickson 11 Marg in Sunny Alberta On Sun, Apr 10, 2011 at 2:57 AM, Lesley Fiedler <[email protected]> wrote: > I am trying to find info on John Dickson who married  Mary Thorburn but have not had any success and wonder if any researchers of  the same surnames have come across anything > > I know from death cert  of his son  Dumfries jeweller Samuel Donaldson Dickson's  1811-1859 , that his father  was a Blacksmith named   John Dickson and his Mother was Mary Thorburn ………… The informant was  brother in- law Walter C------ ?  cant make it out ? 136 High Street Dumfries > >  1841 census has  Samuel  & Ann in Queensbury Street > > > John DICKSON (1784 - ) >  John  +.
