    1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] The MAXWELL Family of Langholm and Canonbie
    2. Jon's FH
    3. Hi everyone, Now I am back home, I will show the 3 generations of the MAXWELL family that I have been tracing with our friend who descends directly through this line. Firstly, can anyone please help to clarify the marriage below, which is the earliest point so far for this family we've found: John MAXWELL and Nelly MURRAY 08 Mar 1804 Westerkirk, Dumfries 08 Mar 1805 Westerkirk, Dumfries both these entries appear on the old style familysearch.org website, but as yet I can't find either of them on the new style site. Is anyone able to confirm which year (if either) is correct please? If anyone has access to images of the original parish records, would they be so kind as to let me know any further details that are recorded on the marriage entry please? The next step in my friends family is through a son of John and Nelly/Helen: Thomas MAXWELL was born 05 Dec 1815 at Langholm. We have so far been unable to find his marriage to Elizabeth ARMSTRONG. We did find an entry for the marriage of a John MAXWELL and Elizabeth ARMSTRONG in the mid 1830's, so whether this is an error or not I don't know. It did go through my mind that maybe Thomas was originally written as Tho and somehow ended up as Jno. I've seen the same idea in reverse in my own family where the father was indexed as Thomas and not John. The next step in my friend's family line is through Thomas and Elizabeth's son, John MAXWELL, who was born at Canonbie in 1848. He married Maggie ELDER, the daughter of Alexander ELDER (the Keeper of the Cross Keys hotel), in 1881, and by the 1891 Census they had moved over the border to Carlisle where they continued raising their family. To those who have already replied to my earlier posts, thanks very much, the suggestions you made will definitely be followed up, especially in relation to what happened to Thomas MAXWELL at Canonbie that caused his death 8 weeks later. Once again, if there are any MAXWELL family researchers who have info on this line, we'd dearly like to hear from you. And if there are any family members out there who descend directly from this line, Liz would dearly love to hear from you, so please feel free to get in touch with me and I can put you in touch with her. With kindest regards to all, Jon Nixey

    3. G'day Brian, I haven't seen any responses to your query, so I could be repeating what you have already been told. I have just had a check on scotlandspeople and there is no record of a marriage from 1855-1866 inclusive for this couple. Do you have any other details. 1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] Marriage of James BUHLMAN to Joan WALKER 1855
    2. Meg Greenwood
    3. Jenny - same here. I just returned from the local Family History Center with access to the filmed INDEXes for Marrriages 1855 and found no match. These INDEXes were made yearly in Scotland beginning 1 Jan and ending 31 December. An actual bound book was put together with alphabetical listings, males in the first section, females in the second section and contain Marriages from all 901 parishes in Scotland. These INDEX films show page after page after page of each of the massive books made using the Registers from the local General Register Office, they are not transcriptions or extractions. The 1855 INDEX books were handwritten and published in 1856. These books began to be typed in about 1861. To be a match [indicating they married each other], both the bride and groom must have identical INDEX information. Year, parish, entry number. I checked 1855 Marriages for BUHLMAN or any derivative [BULMAN, BULLMAN, BUELMAN, etc] and did not find any James or close [like Jas or John] in any of Scotland's 901 parishes. Since its an alpha listing, I can easily see BUL[anything] by looking up and down the columns for other spellings. So even if they happened to spell it BUYLMON or BILLMIN, I'd have seen it. There were no such listings. The IGI has an 1831 Marriage [from actual church Register Books] for the names James BULMAN and Joannah WALKER. They married on 4 Nov, 1831 in Dumfries, Dumfriesshire. The local FHC has not got Dumfries OPRs so I can't check the marriage entry for further information should there be any. Best information I can offer is a confirmation of what Jenny found....no 1855 Marriage anywhere in Scotland for these 2 names or similar ones. Probably the 1831 marriage in Dumfries is right, Elizabeth Little BULMAN was born to those 2 names in Dumfries on 12 August, 1832 and baptized 2 days later. I am seriously thinking the 1855 Marriage sent in as a Patron Submission is faulty information. Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA -----------------------------

    2. Jon's FH
    3. Hi everyone, I've been helping a friend with her Scottish ancestry, and over the past couple of days we have made good headway with her MAXXWELL, ELDER and ARMSTRONG families. We'd love to know if there are any other listers researching this particular family line, or if anyone can help with further information regarding them: John MAXWELL & Ellen/Helen MURRAY: Married 1804/5. Thomas MAXWELL and Elizabeth ARMSTRONG: Marriage details not yet found, but probably circa 1842/3. Thomas died 1885 and Elizabeth 1903 at Canonbie. John MAXWELL & Maggie ELDER: married at Canonbie in 1881, and moved to Carlisle prior to the 1891 Census. Maggie's father was the highly respected Hotel Keeper, Alexander ELDER who ran the Cross Keys Hotel for well over 40 years. Alexander Armstrong's mother's maiden name was given as BRISBANE on his death index. Walter ELDER married Margaret BRISBANE but Margaret was definitely not old enough to be Alexander's mother. Had Walter been previously married? Also, Thomas MAXWELL who died in 1885 appears to have died from a broken neck (if my friend is understanding the cause of death correctly), it states he suffered for 8 weeks before his death. Are there any newspaper archives from 1884/5 for the Canonbie area that may have an article giving details of what happened to him? Any help, pointers and/or suggestions would be gratefully received, very best wishes to all, Jon

To obtain a copy you will have to register on ScotlandsPeople buy some credits, search for her then order the extract, it shows up as £12 for me, but I don't know how much it will be for your friend if that's what she wants to do.   Vanessa  All records are subject to error. 3. ** I queried the difference between Scotland and England a decade or more ago, and the Reg Gen. in Scotland said that in Edinburgh you had free access to all the indexes, and to view a certificate before you purchased it; while in London you paid to see the indexes, and couldn't view certs in advance of purchase, to ensure it was the one you wanted. At that time the cost of a cert. was less in England than Scotland. He said if the cost of certs was reduced to English prices, then access to indexes and the cert. registers would be charged for. The online situation is different, now, but as it involves commercial ventures, run by different companies in Scotland and England, it may be that parliament can only give guidance (say, an upper limit for certs.) rather than be prescriptive. As I recall, prices for government services are set out in statutory instruments, rather than in primary legislation (which sticks to principles), so it may be that the petition is asking the wrong question!
