But as many of the papers on this new database are also on the Gale 19th Century Newspapers, and they are available for free for all Australian Citizens and many in the UK who may have a subscription with their Library it pays to check there first Also I notice quite a few notices that appear in the Gazette's, also free Many stories are shared around so its also worth checking the Australian and New Zealand online papers, both free Just a thought before spending your hard earned on the new site Also worth noting that there are many duplications of the same story across the Country so worth making sure you are not wasting credits downloading the same story in a different newspaper The OCR is on this new site is pretty dire so there must be many words missed completely in the free searches so just because you don't find something does not mean its not there Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fztYPGMrtkI&feature=youtu.be>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fztYPGMrtkI&feature=youtu.be http://scottishgenealogytipsntricks.blogspot.com/2011/11/british-newspaper-archive-is-live.htmlht www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk Maisie

    3. Hoping sks can help my friend who has started to research McGRADY ancestors of Stoneykirk, the family has a link with High Mye. Unfortunately my family history research experience is restricted to England so I'm limited in how much I can help her - although we are both very willing to learn :-). 1. She has a copy of the entry for the 1823 Stoneykirk Banns for William McGRADDIE and Helen BLAINEY, "both in this Parish were enrolled for proclamation of Banns three times first Lord's Day.". Where can she find the Parish Records for this marriage - preferable on-line? 2. William MCGRADY / McGRADDIE (and other variants) according to various census was was born in Ireland . Are there any records which may record Williams origins, apart from the parish record for his marriage to Helen BLAINEY? According to various census: William was bc 1781 - 1798, Ireland and Helen/Ellen was bc 1804, Portpatrick, Wigtownshire (or Stoneykirk). 3. Is there anyone on the list research these lines? We will be very gratefully for any suggestions. Regards, Sue

    3. Hi Desmond, I think you might find it is Hempland Hill, Torthorwald. If you put the postcode DG1 3PP in streetmap.co.uk you will see 'Tinwald House' north and slightly west of Hemplands; the actual Hill is across High Road from this house. Maybe they married in the House? Or one of the few houses along the High Road? Tinwald Church is along the road to the north west, and Torthorwald Church to the south east. Hope some of this makes sense! You can see why my husband does the navigating when we're on holiday ;-) Best wishes, Irene B ----- Original Message ----- From: "Desmond McDowell" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 27, 2011 2:02 PM Subject: [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] Location Help. > Can anyone advise the location of these two places, Kempland-hill and > Dalestone Bank

    3. Hi Ray Although English registration began in 1837 it was not compulsory until around 1872. The Scottish system was statutory from the beginning in 1855. In Scotland, it was legal to marry ' by declaration in the presence of witnesses' until 30th June 1940. In Gretna, the 'priest' would advise his clients to register the marriage but few did. There are records for most of the Gretna Green marriages but many married in other places. If they had children born in Scotland then the birth certificates come in useful as they state place and date of parents marriage. 3. List,        Recently I received a few pages from the cemetery booklet for Troqueer Cemetery, minus the legend that might tell what I want to know.        I noticed that some are numbered such as: 206a, or 212b.        On the map are the location of the stone, designated by the number.  In the listings are 208, of robert Welsh and family, and 209 of Lieut. Col. Geo. Maxwell and family.  On the map is listed 208-9.  Does this mean that 208 and 209 are on the same stone?        Likewise, In the listings are 210, Richard Howat and family, and 211, Homer Cowan and family.  Does this imply that 210 and 211 are on the same stone?  There are no 209, nor 209, nor 211 designated on the map.   Thanks,   Marc Archer Lake Odessa, MI

    3. Hello Mary There is a Whitehill Farm on the borders of Sanquhar and Kirkconnel, which is in Dumfries. If you check the registration district for Mary McDonald' birthand the registration district is one of these, then this is likely the correct location. Myy great grandfather, Samuel Hiddleston, lived in Whitehill Cottages on this farm, where he was a ploughman and later foreman. He died in 1903, so was more than likely there at the same time as your folk. The census would help to confirm this. His children were all registered in Kirkconnel. I have a photo of wWhitehill Cottages, if this proves to be your location I can send it to you. Let me know.
