    1. Re: [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY Digest, Vol 6, Issue 145
    2. Anne Wilson
    3. I am looking for the family of Jean/Jane Johnston(e) b. ab. 1748 in Moffat, d. 1814, married James Edgar ab. 1778. Her parents may be James Johnstone, Wright in Moffat, and Mary Ewart. Their son, John, had a daughter Jessie/Janet Edgar who married George Johstone b. 1830 in Moffat, d. 1913 in Otago, NZ. George Johnstone and Jessie Edgar had a son George Carruthers Johnstone, suggesting that his grandmother may have been a Carruthers. Anyone? -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Friday, December 16, 2011 8:34 PM To: [email protected] Subject: DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY Digest, Vol 6, Issue 145 Today's Topics: 1. We even have our own site on Yahoo: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JohnstonsInPoldean/ and a Newsletter. A Y-DNA test of a male Johnston/e is a definitive test for making a connection. We are of Danish Viking descent, having come across the Channel with William the Conqueror and later going up to Scotland. How can we help you? What caught my particular attention was the following: """In 1873 the Edwin Fox became an immigrant ship. She was chartered to the Shaw Savill & Company to carry immigrants from England to New Zealand as part of the assisted migration scheme started by New Zealand Prime Minister Sir Julius Vogel. She made four voyages between 1873 and 1876, carrying a total of 751 passengers....""" I used to wonder how so many "ordinary" people early on could afford to emigrate as I remember as a teen in the 1940s-1950 hardly ever being able to afford a "day through" to Edinburgh from Glasgow 40 miles away!  This one little passage clears it up.  I had thought assisted passages, the £10 scheme to Australia, was a more recent programme, but apparently not.  I wonder how much such assisted passages cost to go to New Zealand in 1873, as an example. It did carry convicts to Western Australia in the 1850s and later switched to the New Zealand route with immigrants. http://www.theprow.org.nz/The-Edwin-Fox/   Malcolm   -------------------------------    From: [email protected]    Subject: Re: [WIG LIST] Fw: Video on the Edwin Fox - oldest and only surviving ship for transporting convicts to Australia   Hi Maisie,   Interesting video, but I am not sure Chris Paton's information is correct. He says the Edwin Fox was built about 150 years ago (therefore c1861) and brought convicts to New Zealand.   I don't think New Zealand received convicts. However if NZ did take convicts, I would have expected transportation to have stopped by 1861.   Can anyone enlighten me?   Ailsa    -----------------------------     Maisie Egger <[email protected]> wrote:     ...It should be of great interest to those whose forebears were deemed     social problems and were shipped off to Australia. 3. Thanks to Bruce for the recent reminder. Tried again to find the death of one Joan Telford, a GGGG Grandmother, known to be 1861-71. Found it in 1865 in the indexes. Then found it on Scotlands People - it was there all along, but even though the age is on the statutory record, it is not visible when searching ! I now know two more GGGGG Grandparents (William Telford and Margaret Nichol), though first search for further details on them is looking difficult. Jim Graham

    3. This link was forwarded to me by Christine Woodcock. It should be of great interest to those whose forebears were deemed social problems and were shipped off to Australia. The ship is actually in dry dock in New Zealand. I hope they get plenty of funding to refurbish this ship as a floating historical museum. My only unimportant observation is that Chris Paton sounds like a half-boiled Ulsterman/Scot! 1. [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] Riddick name variations in DGFHS database
    2. Sandy Pittendreigh
    3. Hi, Interesting ! Thought I'd check all Riddick name variations in the DGFHS MI database, hits are as follows: Roddick = 47 Riddick  = 14 Reddock = 1 Rodick  = 10 Rudick = 1 Rodk = 4 That makes six variations found on D&G memorials. If you want them just ask -- I'm sure DGFHS won't quibble about one over the offered quota.   Cheers, Sy   ________________________________ From: Gordon Johnson <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, 8 December 2011, 11:51 Subject: Re: [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] Riddick ** There is also the spelling Reddick, which in the case of my brother in law, is now Reddiex, plus Reddock, Riddocks, etc. Gordon.
