    3. Hi Leeona is this the right church? if so go to http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/services/depts/ei/lochken/index.asp?around click on map next to pic of church christine Balmaghie Church (see map) The churchyard is the burial place of three Covenanters: David Halliday of Mayfield, David Halliday of Glengap and George Short. The two Hallidays are buried in the same grave. All three were shot in 1685. Balmaghie is better known as the burial place of S.R. Crockett (1859-1914) the well-known author of "The Raiders" and "Dark o' the Moon" which were inspired by Galloway's history and landscapes. A memorial to Crockett stands on raised ground at the north end of Laurieston village. 2. Jan McLeod
    3. Hi, Because several people have contacted me off list since I mentioned the above census of Kirkcudbright and Dumfries-Galloway, I thought it best to post it to the list. The link is: (http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/services/depts/comres/library/census_search.asp) It is a great initiative of the council and volunteers, and I for one am much appreciative! Janet

    2. George M. McCaig
    3. Jeffrey, I too use Family Tree Maker. I also started with version 4, upgraded to 7, and have now upgraded to 11. The new versions all have some improvement in them, but as you can see I only upgrade sporadically. I very much like version 11. One feature it has over version 7 is the availability of the programs needed for a commercial printer to print the whole family tree on one sheet of paper. I have not used it yet, but have talked to a printer about it. When upgrading I only bought the software, not the new C.D.'s, as although they could be of some help if you are concentrating on U.S. history, they are still only a guide. George M. McCaig, Burlington, Ontario

    1. GEDDES will
    2. Sandra Casson
    3. Hello, Christine. Just type in Scottish wills and the site will appear. Its £5 but well worth it. Unfortunately, I`m not technically minded enough to download the will itself. I`ve had to copy out 11 pages into a book and them type them out. Thought I`d finished earlier but it now appears that, as I`ve had to complete this in several `sittings` they haven`t all been filed -don`t know why -so my task is remains uncompleted. I`d be pleased to send you details of any specific person you are interested in. Best wishes Sandra

    2. Sandra Casson
    3. Hello, Listers. I`ve managed to download a will from Scottish Wills and its made very interesting reading. Its the will of Alexander and Helen McMillan Geddes who lived in Kirkpatrick Durham Village. They are my gt gt gt granparents. Name mentioned are their sons Thomas, William, Samuel,Alexander, James, Robert, who went to America and John to Victoria, Australia. If anyone is related to any of the above I`d love to hear from you and perhaps exchange information. Also mentioned are Robert Corrie, a weaver, married to Helen`s aunt, Isobel McMillan, John Palmer, George Carruthers, James Browne and Peter McKinna. Don`t know if any of these latter names are of interest to anyone out there. The will is dated 7th December 1865. Regards Sandra

    1. Re: Nursery in Kirkcudbright 1800's
    2. Ruth The Duke's of Buccleuch had a large estate in the area (post Lowland Clearances), so maybe the nursery was part of that - one of my forebear's worked as a gardener for the same family at Hardington, their other estate in Lanarkshire. I have the 1851 census index for Wiston & Roberton, LKS so I could check for your names over the weekend. 2. Mary B. Egger
    3. Dear Shirley et al, I use Family Tree Maker and as inept as I am on the computer, I find this programme to be wonderful. However, I wouldn't waste my money on all the so-called updated versions, which amount to additional CDs which I find useless...well, here in the U.S.A. when you're concentrating on U.K. records. I started out with the 4.0 series, then upgraded to 7, even though my husband's nephew told me not to bother...He was right. I should just have been content with the earlier version. Furthermore, the earlier version was about half the price of the so-called upgraded one. Another however: If you are interested in a lot of "stuff," maybe version 11 (or whatever the number is now) would suit you fine. The extraneous CDs won't change the basic format which I consider to be just great. I would also like software that could produce such a family tree. Also, I would like software that produces those concentric circle diagrams which depict the forebears of one individual (not sure what they are called). 1. HELP
    2. David Wylie
    3. I have what is probably a strange request. Can anyone please tell me the origin of the surname Kenmare. So far all I know, my greatgrandfather was born in County Down Northern Ireland, I suspect in or around Kilkeel, but there are only a handful of families in Ireland with the name. I feel the original Kenmare may have been one of those transhipped to Ireland from Scotland at the time of Robert the Bruce. There are several variations in spelling and any or all of the origins would be appreciated. Some of the variations are Kenmore, Kenmure, Kenmuir, Kenmire. There are many more, but any help would be gratefully received. David

    3. Hi all go to this site to find out the current state of NEWSPLAN microfilming. If it doesnt work directly go to www.newsplan2000.org. http://www.newsplan2000.org/schedule.htm If you want to look at "completed titles", choose to have them listed by "Newsplan Group" as this makes it easier to see which are in your area (its an excel file by the way). The project is supposed to supply a copy free to appropriate libraries - it will make it a lot easier to find out what is available and request a printout. Judy
