    3. Hi, I have a Archibald Graham who was a schoolmaster of Westerkirk, he was born 1750 and died 1832, I was hoping someone out there has or would point me in the right direction of any book or record that would enhance the information that I hold ie basically what is above, thanks in advance. Hightae, Lochmaben -- Thanks Irene Irene (or anyone else who can help), Thanks for the email back. I am researching the possibility that James Jardine was a "schoolmaster" because that is the occupation stated for him on his daughter Janet Millar (nee Jardine)'s Statutory Death Record. In the 1851 Census, it states James was born in Lochmaben (as James, his daughter Janet and his Millar grandchildren lived in his house, I think it is definitely the right census entry). I had thought he was born in Hightae, but I have not kept track of what record (if any) caused me to believe that. I guess that I jumped to a conclusion that he worked as a schoolmaster in Hightae. It must have been somewhere else. According to the Census, he would have been born in 1772. So I am looking between the years of 1787 and 1845. Anyway, I am being long winded to someone who has already tried to help me. Do you have any ideas were else I might look? Thanks for your help. 3. Hello, Further to some messages below, I am interested in information on a schoolmaster, James Jardine, who lived in Hightae between 1770 or so and (last known reference 1851). Presumably, he taught in Hightae as well. Questions arising from Ms. Olsen's email below: What are "heritors"? Is there heritors' records for Hightae or Lochmaben? Is there town records for Hightae (I think it was only a village)? If no town records for Hightae, would such information be in town records for Lochmaben? Is there town records for Lochmaben? Is there newspaper records dating this far back for Hightae or Lochmaben? Thanks all. 3. Hello, Christa-- William Halliday and J MIKEN are mine, I think. From Howard Sproat's, Scotland: Old Parish Records: Parish of Girthon: Kirkcudbrightshire: Marriages 1818-1854 (examined, if I recall correctly, at the Family History Center in Dumfries), I have: "March 19, 1822 William Halliday of Ernambrie, Parish of Crossmichael to Jessie McMiken of High Creoch" Jessie was a sister of my great-great-grandfather. Does the entry from the Register for Scotland provide any further information than that above? If so, I'd be very pleased to have it. Cheers. 1. MARSHALL, McGOWAN, & HUGGINS - Dumfries, 1868-1876
    2. Alison Causton
    3. Hello: I am new subscriber to this mailing list and an utter newbie at Scottish family history research ... so I have a lot to learn ;-). My interest in this constellation of surnames -- MARSHALL, McGOWAN, and HUGGINS-- begins in County Tyrone, Ireland. We've been able to trace our HUGGINS line back to c.1700 at Glenarb townland in Aghalow parish, Co Tyrone. Scotland --in particular, Dumfries-- enters the picture when the will of William HUGGINS was proved in 1868. One of the trustees was James Hairstens McGOWAN of Dumfries, solicitor. Other names in this will include: - a grand-niece, Annie McGowan - William MARSHALL of Dumfries - James Hairstens McGOWAN and his wife, Annie, and their daughter, Emily A later will, of William's sister Margaret, proved in 1876, also mentions: - a grand-nephew, Joseph Garibaldi MARSHALL, son of William, a medical doctor of Dumfries - Joseph's brother, John James Hairstens MARSHALL The HUGGINS-MARSHALL connection dates back to c.1760 when a Joseph MARSHALL of County Tyrone married a daughter of John HUGGINS [c.1700-1747]. It is the MARSHALL connection transferring to Dumfries and the introduction of the McGOWAN --and possibly also McGRAIN-- surnames that are presenting new, and interesting, research challenges. If anyone recognizes these names and/or has suggestions where to start, I welcome your responses. I would also like to learn if it is possible to pinpoint more precisely the Scottish place origin of our HUGGINS ancestors; for instance, are there surname distributions summarized from tax or similar records that I should be looking at? Thanks in advance, Alison Causton Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, Canada
