Hello: I finally found my family on the 1901 census and it says he was born in what is very hard to read, but looks like Dummfresshen, Scotland. Does anyone have a clue where in Scotland this could be? He married Annie Hindmarsh 21 October 1878 in Newcastle Upon Tyne. She was born in Alnwick, Northumberland County, England. His father was Samuel Cowan. His son was Samuel Cowan born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England in 1881. Has sisters Jane, Agnes, Annie and Mary. His sister Jane was born in Alnwick, Northumberland County, England and the rest of them are born in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Does this sound like your line, let me know. Thanks, Mae Rusk

I have had a wonderful past few days looking at the 1861 census films for various family members. My question is what is the definition & difference between the above two colums or names. An example is Parish of St Mary's, Dumfries. Parlimentary Burgh of Dumfries. Royal Burgh of Dumfries. Town of Dumfries. Barbara
I came across the following which may be of interest both for the historical connections and as a possible future holiday accommodation in D & G. I have stayed at other properties, including The Castle of Park at Glenluce, and can confirm the first class job this charity is doing to secure our heritage. The following is from their website. The Landmark Trust has since 1965 rescued over 200 historic buildings, all of which would have faced a very different future had they not taken them on. Holiday letting income pays for the ongoing maintenance of these buildings making their future secure. First, though, funds must be raised for their restoration. The Countess of Galloway built this diminutive cottage in the early nineteenth century. She also founded a charity school for children on the estate: accounts vary as to whether the Lodge was the schoolhouse or the home of the governess who taught the girls. In 1842 it was recorded that '25 girls are instructed in reading, writing, arithmetic and needlework by a female teacher' and the lodge was indeed once known as Cumloden School. Today it stands at the end of a long track in a wild and tussocky deer park with views of beautiful surrounding countryside, not far from the Solway Firth. It is yet another example of a charming estate building left stranded without water, electricity or purpose. It is packed with delightful architectural detail - how sad if it were to be lost, yet it is not far from collapse. Negotiations with the owner of the estate for a long lease are well advanced which will give it life once more- subject to raising the funds. A burgh is a town; a royal burgh is a status granted by the crown and can be very ancient ..usually it gave trading rights, rights to hold markets, etc; a parliamentary burgh means that Dumfries had the right to return an elected (in 1861 by a fairly small electorate) member of parliament. Would anyone know the best way to access an obit, or death notice in the 1890s in Dumfries? Also, does anyone know what type of info to expect from such during that time period? Thanks, Marc Archer in Flint, Michigan
Hello Sandy, Thank you for the infomation. Too bad old George wasn't there. The second marriage of Joseph Clark to Barbara Thomson was news to me. From the IGI, I found out that they married 9 months after his first wife died; from Scotlandspeople, Joseph died of paralysis in Dumfries Hospital in 1870. And of course the hospital matron who was the informant didn't know his parents' names!! Thanks again for taking the trouble to record all the information and share it. Looking back at "Kirkconnel, A Pictorial History" Pg 56 mentions children taking train to Rood Fair in Dumfries. Is this Fair still held and when. Book also mentions Co-operative Gala days held by Ancient Shepherds, the Rechabites, the Anderson Clubs etc. Does this bring back any memories? Ron

Dear Dr. S. P. Prawel, Thank you for your offer. I would be most grateful for the information. I have a fair amount of the ancient line obtained mostly from published peerages, but also from original research carried out by various people. A few of my contacts (but not me!) have connections to the ancient landed famililies and it is fascinating to track the world-wide meanderings down to present time. First of all a big thank you to Bruce McLachian for his help and information about John Tait and Robert Wright Does anybody have any photographs or story's of John Tait Sexton and Beadle of St Micheals in the 1870's he was also keeper of the Robert Burns Mausoleum. In the book:: Memorials of St Michael's The Old Parish Churchyard of Dumfries by William McDowall 1876 he writes: The Dumfries Burns Club have also some right of custodiership, not strictly defined, over the Mausoleum and its keeper Mr.John Tait, the sexton of St Micheals pays the club a small yearly tribute for the right to show the shrine and levy a small charge on visitors; the sum being now fix at 3d each instead of an undefined gratuity as was formerly the case. Are there any old photos of him showing the mausoleum to visitors as he was my GG Grandfather I would love to have more information on him Best Regards David Brown dbccon@ntlworld.com
