Hi Valerie, I am very interested in your posting re James Cowan, really because of the place of birth Dunscore, Dumfries. My GGGGrandfather David Cowan was born in Dunscore and his father was James Cowan, of course this happened way back in 1801 however, its possible that this James Scott Cowan is a child of a brother of either James or David. If sks could look up the 1881 census for Cowans born in Dunscore, Dumfries, it may shed some light on the Cowans for me. Have to admit, I have not as yet delved into my Cowan side of the family as have my hands full trying to sort out my Kennedys. Can I point out that a certificate is not the same thing as buying the image from the Scotlandspeople site. A certificate costs about £13 from Register House in Edinburgh. I don't think you'll get the notation on the back from Scotlandspeople..but I think I read somewhere that they are in the process of (or are planning to ) scanning the RCE volumes Irene
I work in a public library in England. We have Infotrac available in the library and also online for members - you need to input your library barcode to access the database. Check if your local library offers something similar. It has newspapers other than the Times too. Sheena

In answer to your enquiry - yes, Charles Sharpe does have a headstone in Cummertrees churchyard. It is unlikely to appear in the Memorials in Annandale registers however because it is not really pre-1855. But I know it well. It begins: "In memory of William son of Charles Sharpe in Kelhead who died 30th Sept 1852 aged 1 year. Also Isabella his daughter who died 19th Oct 1853 aged 2 months ..." [it continues through 13 lost children - yes I know, thirteen.] It ends: "Also William his son who died at Thebarton [should be Theberton] Street, Islington, London 8th March 1880 aged 19 years [death certificate says 7th, aged 18]. Also the above Charles Sharpe who died at Stenries 26 Feb 1895 aged 78 years. Also Isabella Sharpe his wife who died at Topmuir, Cummertrees 17th July 1921 aged 91 years." My interest in Charles Sharpe the elder, stems from his position as Limeworks manager at Kelhead and from his dear wife Isabella McKune, sister of my gggrandmother. I would be interested in continuing this, privately if necesssary, with anyone interested in the Sharpes of Closeburn or Kelhead Quarry. Keith Scott mariner98@supanet.com
