Hi Folks, Response to Jim and others. Nobody has been more peeved than me with the delay in getting our website back online! Freenetname have been messing us about. They wanted 25 quid to reinstate our website. I disputed their reasons for disabling it in the first place. I advised DGFHS that a change of Service Providers would be a better option, also involving a service fee of 25 quid which we sent over a week ago along with the appropriate documentation. The claim to have received the documents but no cheque *!*!*! (expletives deleted). Anyway I have restored the DGFHS website at the following temporary address: www.research-centre.freeola.com please use that URL until we get our domain name back. Sandy PS Thanks for all the emails, I didn't realise that our website was so popular. > > (And what's happening about DGFHS website? I was wondering if anyone knows where I can see the full text of the MIs for Kirkmahoe? New Register House has a fiche index for some of the D&G parishes which has been a help but it doesn't have the full text. The Mitchell library in Glasgow has a number of booklets for Dumfrieshire but unfortunately not that one. (And what's happening about DGFHS website? I see it's still down - that's a few weeks now). Hi Ian I haven't found any Hamiltons in the family tree so far, but Margaret ,ofcourse, is very common in all family trees. Wish there were some HAMILTONS though, after watching Todd Hamilton playing in the British open (golf) today- What a nice man he seems to be from a small town in America. I was hopingMichael Campbell (from my home country of New Zealand) would do better. But I am digressing- I will certainly keep your Margaret in my files-Thanks By the way- no one has answered my original question- where is St Michaels. I don't think there are any pre-1800 events in the batch number series M118571 (C118571) - M118579 (C118579). Only the batches ending in 1, 2, and 4 have any content at all and it seems to be all post-1800. ("seems" - I'm looking at notes made a long time ago and haven't rechecked the IGI website.) Perhaps there are batches in another number sequence out there somewhere? Cheers. Hello to all, I am fairly new to this list after discovering some links to Dumfries. I'm not familiar with the Dumfries area as most of my research has been in Glasgow, Bute, or Perthshire. My ggg grandfather was William Howat(son). He was born abt 1821 in Dumfries to John Howat(son) and Agnes Grierson. He married Janet Menzies in 1846. Janet's parents were John Menzies and Margaret Baxter. William was a blacksmith, like his father John. William & Janet had 10 children, one of which was my gg grandmother Mary. I believe they were in Dumfries up until 1868 at least. By 1881 they were in Glasgow, and seemed to stay there until their deaths in 1892 and 1893. I don't know why they seem to have changed their name from Howatson (while in Dumfries) to Howat (once they arrived in Glasgow). Anyone have any ideas on this? I would like to find more information on William & Janet's parents, as all I have are their names & occupation. Can someone advise where I can find MI lists for the Dumfries area? Christine in Toronto
Just saying hi. Joined the list today and already enjoying reading everyone's posts. I only recently discovered my family's links to Dumfries although I was aware of the links the name had with the area. I'm researching Lockhart primarily... so far from Tundergarth, Applegarth and Wamphray... and also Graham as my Grt Grt Grt Grt Grandmother's name (pheww!! lol). Was delighted to find another avenue for sharing information. Still learning about the area which I don't know terribly well. Look forward to "chatting" to everyone. Louise (in Livingston)

Donna, St. Michael's Church is located in Dumfries on St. Michael's Street at the northeast corner of St. Michael's St. and Brooms Road. It is now called St. Michael's & South and Townhead, resulting from the union of the two congregations in October 1983 after the South and Townhead Church closed. It is the oldest church in Dumfries; the current structure dates from 1746 when it was rebuilt. A Christian church has stood on this site for over 1300 years. It is believed that a sanctuary established by St. Ninian (circa 390 AD) also occupied this site and, even further back, it was a Druid worship site. It has about 3,000 memorial stones. Among the notables buried there is of course, Robert Burns and his wife Jean Armour. Dr. & Mrs. James Crichton, founder of the Crichton Royal Hospital, are also buried here. The common graves of the victims of the 1832 and 1848 cholera epidemics are also within the walls of the churchyard. I could go on and on, but will stop here. A truly fascinating place to visit and worship in if you ever have the chance to holiday in Dumfries. I've had the honor of doing so back in 1998 and 1999. This is a great offer by both of you. The St Michael MI are my next steps with one particular line. The key people are... William Thomson who was born ~1775 and died 17/11/1866 he was the farmer at Rashgill Farm his children were baptised at St Michaels so th eopresumption is he is buried there. His wife is the elusive one. He was "married" to Agnes Coltart as per these kirk sessions "Dumfries Kirk of Sessions 26/02/1808: Irregular marriage last whitsunside; paid £1 fine to poor. Ref: CH2/537/10 p293" William was widowed prior to 1841. I would be hugely interested in anything about Agnes and William, especially Agnes.
