    2. J A Olsen
    3. Sorry, I missed this one and dont think anyone else answered. I will have to be a bit vague as I dont know enough to make a precise definition. Heritors are the influential members of the parish. They made certain decisions but also paid out for some community expenditures. I am not sure how you qualified to be a heritor but I imagine it was on the value of your heritable property - after all who would volunteer to pay a share of eg the dominies salary unless you had to? In the case of a burgh, there would be an overlap between the heritors and the burgh council members ie they would be the great and the good, dine in each others houses, marry each others daughters and subscribe to the same charitable causes. The same group of men would be elders of the clerk and members of any committee going. In the mid to late 19thc there were quite a few of these. I dont know whether women could be heritors or whether executors of an estate could hold the position. I suspect the answer is a) no and b) yes, but I am willing to be corrected. I believe though that women property owners were allowed to vote in the election of school boards when they came in following the education act. In order to see if there are records your first stop is the local archives office and your second is the Scottish National Archive in Edinburgh. Hope this helps Judy ---------- >From: "Jeffery K. Both are post 1929 and so not available online at ScotlandsPeople. To get a certified copies of a marriage cert and a birth cert would cost 13 GB pounds each. It is possible, I think, to make an appointment to be allowed access to the records at the Dumfries Registrars but it costs about 15 GBP an hour. The cheapest way to get the information is to employ searcher who visits Register House in Edinburgh to hand copy the records for you...... they usually charge about 3 or 3 GBPs per entry + of course the time it takes to find the right ones since you won't have reference numbers. 1. Re: COWANS IN DUMFRIES
    2. Hello David, Noticed that you are researching the COWAN family in Dumfries. Perhaps, we have a connection. I have a John Cowan (1789-1869) who married in Moffatt, Dumfries before 1819 Elizabeth HASTIE (1795-1877). They had 8 children, all born in Moffatt (Janet, Peter, Jane, Robert,Alice, Elizabeth, John and Agnes). When Agnes was an infant, the entire family emigrated to St. John's, Nfld where other COWAN relatives were already living. Jane COWAN was my ggm. Do any of these names seem familiar? I have some earlier info on the COWAN line, and info on the NFld COWANS. Dot W.

    3. Hello All, Well, after my much travelled luggage and most of my research papers have touched down back in Arcadia Vale, I would like to thank everyone I came across in my 900+mile journey around Wigtownshire, D & G and Ayrshire. Every person I spoke to or visited (living and dead, family or friend) was so friendly and helpful, yes, even the headstones! John, Ann Sharpe for the B&B asked that I extend her best wishes to you and yours and would like to see you again when you next decide to take a trip back. A lovely lady with a good sense of humour. To Sandy and Cathy thank you and lovely to meet after all these years we have been talking by email. Will be chasing up some more information as soon as my Scottish papers arrive from Ontario after being saved from the floodwaters in my mum's cousins basement. Also, whilst I was away David changed our ISP so my new email address is jenm@exemail.com.au Regards Jenny Lake Macquarie NSW

    1. Re: [D-G LIST] New List Member -MENZIES
    2. Dorothy Holden
    3. My MENZIES are from Dumfriesshire as well - my gt gt grandfather John MENZIES first shows up in Newark Nottinghamshire England on the 1841 census. He is listed as a Draper and living with him is a younger brother, Robert, with no occupation. John is given as being 25 and Robert as 21 but this is the census with the rounding up/down instructions so I doubt if that is their real age! Shortly after they were joined by a third brother, Thomas. All three went into business, John became a Master Draper with a shop and several other properties in Newark, Robert and Thomas became Tea Dealers and then Grocers. All three married local girls, Robert marrying twice when he was left a widower with several small children. All three gave their father as Andrew MENZIES, Farmer. None stated him as deceased on their marriage entries. All three named their eldest son Andrew and their second daughter Agnes. I believe they were following a traditional naming pattern - especially as the second son and eldest daughter are always named for the parents of the wife. I have had the 1841 census for Dumfrieshire checked without success. My Mum did start to research this end of the family and obtained baptisms records for Robert and Thomas showing them to have been born in Durrisdeer and Enterkinfoot. Parents were shown as Andrew MENZIES and Agnes MINZIE. I have found an Andrew and Agnes MENZIES, brother and sister, living at Woodhouselee on the census records and - having obtained their death certificates find that they are shown as the children of Andrew and Agnes, so I believe them to be brother and sister to "my" Menzies brothers. I haven't been able to find a baptism for John, but have found a baptism for Agnes MINZIE whose father was John. There is also a William MENZIES in the census who could be another brother. William is often a second name to the sons of John,Robert and Thomas. A researcher checked the MI's for Durrisdeer and a fellow lister kindly checked the graveyard itself without finding any graves for the family. Although I have made contact with two distant cousins they have had less information than I did so I am still trying to prove that my line was living in Dumfriesshire. regards, Dorothy Dorothy Holden Dover Kent England Uk --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
