    3. Hello Listers, I am trying to locate the family of James Kenyon & Elizabeth Hood in the 1861 Census. They had children, Christina, Grace, James & Agnes- born between 1841 & 1855. At the time of the 1851 Census they were in Whithorn & by 1871 in Gatehouse of Fleet. Unfortunately I have not been able to find them at either place in the '61! Have I just overlooked them or were they elsewhere? I would greatly appreciate any offers of a search - am willing to reciprocate in Cumberland. Jo Brown

He died in 1838 aged 43 and is buried in New Abbey with her (died 1868) and one of their sons. This is my line (and there's a few of us about these groups!) Unfortunately we can't yet connect James to any other Gunnions though there must be siblings or cousins in the area. He & wife Mary had at least 2 children in Kirkbean in the 1820s then went to Dumfries for a while - Ruthwell & Caerlaverock. there's lots of Gunnions over there. The Jane Hamilton (nee Gunnion) was the daughter of James Gunnion and Jane Hyslop. I don't have anything in my Gunion notes about you Ellen though, sorry. Jill McKenzie, Glasgow

    3. Will save this for future reference. Thanks. Our DOUGLAS ancestor is still a mystery. Mary Douglas married William Gordon. We are told that an MI @ Carsphairn says Mary died 15 Jan 1778, William died 17 July 1783, both born circa 1724. There were 2 children: Agnes Gordon born 1762, m David McJerrow, died 1851; James Gordon died after 1783. If some one has the Carsphairn MIs would appreciate the exact wording . Does anyone know of our Mary? 3. Hi everyone, Hope you are all well. I am struggling again, with a look-up for 1881. This time its RIDDLE (or RIDDELL), The story so far - Alexander RIDDLE and Mary KENNEDY had the following children: Anariah RIDDLE born 1863 Alexander RIDDLE born 16/8/1865 Jemima RIDDLE born 1868 Matilda RIDDLE born 1876 Rebecca RIDDLE born 1879 ALL IN DUMFRIES, DUMFRIESHIRE So far on 1881 census have found - Anariah married to John PILES with sisters Jemima, Matilda and Rebecca and their grandmother Jane KENNEDY. Have been unable to find parents or Alexander in Dumfries. How difficult is it to search the whole of the UK for these people? The lady at the library yesterday didn't help much, but think she kept picking the Lowlands CD all the time. She did find one Alexander, but he was the son of William RIDDELL. Can anyone please help me? I wouldn't have thought that Mary would have been that far away from home on census night, considering that Rebecca is only 2 years old. Take care Fiona Down Under

    3. G'day , I have a George GRACIE was educated about 1815 at Wallace Hall, Closeburn, Dumfries, SCT. I gather that the school is now in the Closeburn Primary School but I wonder if there is a register or other document that lists pupils during the early part of the 19th century. There may have also been other brothers at the time. A secondary question is what sort of fees would have been required. Although his father died with an estate of only £118-15-7 he did have the ownership (lease) of two houses in Thornhill and "had seen better times".
