    3. Hi John you really need an expert for this one but my view would be: I am not sure how late the coach services kept operating. But if you are talking about the late 1840s as opposed even to the early part of the decade, the railway network was pretty extensive. But I think it is still quite likely that they took a boat to Liverpool and then the train from there. So really, the dates are critical and so is the cost. You need to find out exactly what was available and who was travelling. The wealthy would presumably pick the most comfortable route - private carriage to nearest rail station, first class ticket. Those looking for work would rough it and do as much as they could on foot. 3. Yes I did mean DornocK but this is written as DornocH in some OPR & census even though it meant the Dumfrieshire one. Thanks to all for the replies I'm off to search Graitney OPR for James' birth/marriage. James and Dorathy's kids turn up on the Dornock but guess they were originally from Graitney? The cheapest way was to walk, and I would suspect that for most ag. lab. families this would be the only way. There was a coach from Portpatrick to Dumfries and one for Dumfries to London but would an ordinary family be able to afford it? And the railway too cost money. Another possibility would be to travel to somewhere like Liverpool by ship ..there was a fair amount of shipping traffic between Galloway and Liverpool. Irene

    3. Hi All, My long search is over! I accidently found MI which looked good for my mysterious John Scott. In Dornoch... In Memory of James Scott who died at Torduff 4th July 1834 age 67 Also Dorcas Bell spouse of James Scott Torduff who died 9th April 1819 age 52. And Janet their daughter who died 6th August 1811 age 10 months. Also George their son who was lost with the crew of the Brig Village of Newcastle on Cromar Sands, Norfolk 31st October 1823 age 25 years and Jane their daughter who died at Annan 21st November 1849 age 49. And Christine daughter of John Scott of Annan who died 9th April 1823 age 10 moths. Also James his son who died at Bueonos Aires 19th May 1851 age 23 And the above named John Scott who died 17th April 1859 age 66 Also Robert Scott his son who died at Annan 21st December 1862 age 29 I searched for Robert's death cert and that confirms that he is the son of my John Scott and Helen Caruthers - yippeee. Can anyone tell me what parish Torduff is in? I found a website that said Annan but this MI was in Dornoch and a submitted family on the IGI that matches this (minus John Scott) is saying Graitney. Sooo who is right? Thanks, Pam

    1. Researching BLACKLOCK and BEEBY
    2. Kathy Nemaric
    3. Hello, I am new to the list, so I thought I would post my interests - I have Thomas BLACKLOCK (b. abt. 1840, d. 1827) and Isabella BEEBY (1738-1792), who married 7 November 1771. They are buried in the Old Annan Cemetery in Dumfries. Monumental inscriptions say he was a baker by trade. (Dumfries is where my Scottish Blacklock line originates, when their son Joseph married Jean GRAY in Dumfries in 1814.) It took me a while to find Thomas and Isabella's marriage, as I made the (incorrect) assumption that they, like all the Blacklocks I had been tracing up to this point, were from Scotland. Imagine my surprise and delight when I finally found them in St. Mary, Carlisle, Cumberland - just over the Solway Firth! New avenues to explore. I thought Blacklock was a Scottish name, but now I find it is English. I know that Isabella BEEBY was born in Wetheral, Cumberland. I have not been able to identify Thomas' birthplace, as there are likely candidates in both Dumfries and Cumberland and I haven't been able to investigate further yet. I'm waiting for parish microfilm from my local FHC. I would love to hear from anyone else who may have these families in their research. Kathy Judge Nemaric Orlando, FL, USA

    1. Scottish Naming Patterns
    2. Ian Ritchie
    3. Hi Listers, I have a query which will hopefully not be totally obscured by my fractured logic. If a first son was born and named after the paternal grandfather as per the Scottish naming pattern. Then a second son was born and named after the maternal grandfather. A third son was born and would normally take his father's name but could not because, since the father had the same name as the paternal grandfather, that name had already been given to the first son. Thus he was named arbitrarily. Then say the first son died! Is this son then discounted from the pattern allowing a new,now third son,to take the father's name as the original is now defunct? My apologies for this hypothetical situation the answer to which could send me off into a new frenzy of searching. Ian Ritchie
