I am trying to trace the last resting place of Emily Louisa Alexandra Rose McMonies née Scotchings, who died September 8th 1944 in Dumfries and whom the family bible shows as being buried in Troqueer Cemetery. Are there local papers which might have carried a death notice, or burial registers that might be accessed? Help, please.... JR

I am trying to trace the last resting place of Emily Louisa Alexandra Rose McMonies née Scotchings, who died September 8th 1944 in Dumfries and whom the family bible shows as being buried in Troqueer Cemetery. With such a distinctive name, it should have been an easy task, but all our efforts to date have drawn a blank. Can SKS suggest the next step for someone who is operating from outside the area? Are there local papers which might have carried a death notice, or burial registers that might be accessed? Help, please.... JR

Another reason for men lying as in one case in my family was so that he could work longer - a great uncle worked well into his 70's in Australia. I believe in the past older men were paid less than younger ones and so put their ages down. They would lie to the census enumerator too for fear that their information would be passed on.
