    2. Barbara Brown Allen
    3. Hi List: Does anyone on the list have a copy of Donald Whyte's "A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada before Confederation" vol. 2 (1995)? A Thomas Blacklock is supposed to be mentioned on p. 20. I would most appreciate if sks would tell me what is written about him, and am thanking you in advance. Also: My Blacklocks came to Canada from Ecclefechan. Which port would have been the most likely port of departure and/or port of entry into Canada? My Thomas Blacklock (who married Jean Cock, Dornock) seems more remote than ever. Thanks for your help, any and all leads. Barbara Brown Allen Blacklock, Cock, Rome, Carruthers, Cockpen

    3. Hi Fiona: The lady you are looking for can usually be found in graveyards around Scotland and is still researching Kennedys. She was found recently lying sleeping on a table top grave..most irreverent of her but then she does have a wicked sense of humour..her excuse was "looking for graves is tiring work." She relocated from Canada a few months ago to Dumfries. Okay, I own up to being the Margo Moffat you are looking for and will welcome an exchange of information. My Kennedys married into the Millars. I am using my husband's email so please email me and we will compare notes. Margo -----Original Message----- From: Fiona Garrett [mailto:fionak2009@yahoo.com.au] Sent: 10 August 2004 04:43 To: DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [D-G LIST] Margo Moffat Hi Everyone, I am wondering if this lady is still researching her Kennedy family in Dumfries. A message posted to this site on 8/1/2000 by Margo stated that she had the following: Robert Kennedy, Butcher, married to Jane Richardson 10th March, 1871, they had a son Robert born 1871 also. I have collected a bit of info on Robert, the butcher and his brothers. I am eager to compare notes with Margo, as she may have a piece of this jigsaw, that I am unable to find, mainly as I live too far away, even although I have contacted the Ewart Library to no avail. If anyone can help, I would love to hear from you. Thanks again Peter & Heather, at the moment I can not think how to approach that snippet of information though, so will hold onto it in case it is needed later. With thanks. > Signed Janet Godfrey I am researching these same families as branches of our HUGGINS line from County Tyrone, Ireland. Unfortunately, the hyperlinked e-mail address doesn't work, and I have been unable to contact Ms Godfrey. I have written snailmail letters to several Godfrey households in Launceston and contacted the local family history society, but to no avail. I am making this post to the DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY mailing list, on the offchance that Janet sees it one day. Regards, Alison Causton Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, Canada

    3. Good morning everyone, While browsing through the archives of this list, I came across a message from the above person that relates to my Kennedys. Of course being 6 years old, the email addy was no longer valid. Does anyone on the list, know if this person is still researching her family tree, and if possible be able to either pass on my email addy to her, or let me know hers. Reading all the mail, re-inforced to me, how wonderful this site is, and how informative you all are. It surely is one of the best mailing lists. Thanks for your help. Fiona Down Under

    1. McMonies or Scotchings
    2. Jack R.
    3. I am trying to trace the last resting place of Emily Louisa Alexandra Rose McMonies née Scotchings, who died September 8th 1944 in Dumfries and whom the family bible shows as being buried in Troqueer Cemetery. With such a distinctive name, it should have been an easy task, but all our efforts to date have drawn a blank. Can SKS suggest the next step for someone who is operating from outside the area? Are there local papers which might have carried a death notice, or burial registers that might be accessed? Help, please.... JR

JR

    1. GREENBRAE LOANING
    2. This is my third attempt to send this to the D-G List.  First two bounced! I think Rootsweb must still be involved in upgrading systems or some such thing, the WIG-List seems to have lost something I sent recently as well.               ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Audrey asked, > > Hi  can anyone tell me anything about this place > GREENBRA LOANING > GREENBRA > Dumfries > its the address given for John Sewell born 1885 > thanks > Audrey > It is GREENBRAE  LOANING.  Now a street completely swallowed up in the expanded Dumfries town.  At one time it would have been farmland.  A loaning is a sort of right-of-way for the passage of animals and vehicles through cultivated farmland. There are a number of LOANINGS in and around Dumfries. Sandy

    3. Another reason for men lying as in one case in my family was so that he could work longer - a great uncle worked well into his 70's in Australia. 3. I believe in the past older men were paid less than younger ones and so put their ages down. They would lie to the census enumerator too for fear that their information would be passed on.
