    2. Mrs E. Smith
    3. Mike, Firstly in my personal opinion there is unlikely to be any connection between the given name Francis and the surname of Fraser. I have not found a Francis Gracie. According to McDowall (Memorials of St Michaels, pub. 1876) James Gracie was buried in what has become to be known as "Poets' Corner" (p80) i.e. in that part of the graveyard where the body of Robert Burns was first interred. On pages 82 and 83 there are quite a lot of details about James Gracie. It is stated that he died on the 23rd March 1814 at the age of 58. For a number of years he was a magistrate holding the office of the Treasurer and Dean of Guild. On the same monument:- "his wife Jean Cowan, who died 15 October 1836, aged 88; niece of Mary Wilson of Kelton, wife of William Kirkpatrick of Conheath, and great grandmother of of Eugenie, Empress of the French; ..." Several of their children are also mentioned. Eunice Smith Tel: 0131 336 2013

    3. G'day Eunice, Thanks for your reply; it is tending to harden the evidence that New Abbey is the "seat" of this line and that it does not connect with the Morton area. > Maurice Lindsay's `The Burns Encyclopaedia'. Yes - I have found that online. I am beginning to see this line as coming from one Francis GRACIE who had a son in 1726 [OPR]; then "William GRACIE weaver, son to Francis Gracie in Kirkmaho & Margaret McGowan, daughter to the deceased Samuel McGowan both of this place & married 14th December" (1752) [from the Dumfries OPR film]. Although I do not have positive connections it does appear that James could have been a son of this William. There is also an other later Francis GRACIE "who resided at Carse of Newabbey and died upon the first day of January eighteen hundred and seventeen years" [from his testament] but this testament makes no mention of the GRACIE name except his which I found baffling. > He is also mentioned in R. D. Thornton's `William Maxwell to > Robert Burns' (pub. 1979., pp 57, 184). Thanks for that - had not seen that evidence. > There are several Gracies in `McDowall's Memorials of St > Michael's' but I have not checked them. There could be something there. I have not seen anything from that yet. I seem to see very little use of the name "Francis" except for the two mentioned. Do you think "Frazer/Fraser" could have taken its place as a family name? 1. James GRACIE - Died 23rd April 1814.
    2. Mike Calder
    3. G'day , I wonder if SKS in Dumfries could, at a convenient time, see if there was ever an obituary or other newspaper report on the passing of James GRACIE who died there on 23rd April 1814. It would appear that The Dumfries Commercial Bank was set up by James Gracie in 1804 but failed four years later. The bank was described in Andrew Kerr's "History of Banking in Scotland" as a "wretched attempt" at banking. This bank issued Guinea (21/-) and Five Pound notes until it's ultimate and rather quick sequestering in 1808 with a payout of 10/- on the Pound. Amongst the other details I have already discovered are: He may have been born about 1756 at New Abbey, Kirkcudbright. He married Jean COWAN about 1777 His eldest son was a William GRACIE a Writer to the Signet in Edinburgh. Another son - John Fraser GRACIE was also a writer in Dumfries. He had a number of other children. He was a great friend of BURNS. He was bankrupt. I am trying to find his parents and his date of birth - age at death. Thanks in advance for anything that is forthcoming. Mike CALDER http://members.optusnet.com.au/mikecalder/ Researching: CALDER, DIXON, TUSON, GRACIE D&GFHS #2979

    2. Dilys Loomes
    3. Hello List, My name is Dilys Loomes and I live in Pleasant Point, a little country town in South Canterbury, New Zealand. I am new to the list and I am researching the above people. James/Robert Irving was my gg/grandfather and came from Dunfrieshire. I am trying to find out more about him. I know he married Janet Rae, date unknown, and they had at least four children, James (my ggrandfather) was born 1840, George, John born 1848, and David. If sks has access to the 1851 and 1861 census could they please look to see if my information is correct and if there are any other siblings. TIA Dilys

    1. ROBERT IRVING
    2. Fiona Garrett
    3. Welcome Dilys, You'll love this list, everyone is so helpful and a wealth of knowledge. The 1851 census is on line at www.dumgal.gov uk/services/depts/comres/library/census_search.asp Check it out, type Irving in surname and in the household box - 6/122 , parish - Annan All these Irvings were born in Kirkpatrick Fleming. Household 1/18 also has Irvings who were born there, wouldn't be surprised if they are related somehow. The 1861 census microfilm for the parish you require can be ordered from any LDS family history centre, for viewing, it costs $6.00 here in Oz, and you can view it for a month, before it needs to be returned. The 1841 census for either Annan or Kirkpatrick Fleming, should be available in booklet form, it can be ordered from Dumfries-Galloway Family History Society visit their website for order forms, it is not exorborent cost either, only a couple of pounds per book. Good luck! Fiona Down Under Researching Kennedy and Cowan in Dumfries

    3. Mike, You will find a short note about James Gracie (1756?-1814) in Maurice Lindsay's `The Burns Encyclopaedia' (1959 and 1980, p148). I think that the text will be available online if you use GOOGLE . It states that Gracie was born in New Abbey and that for 20 years he was a magistrate in Dumfries and a captain of the Dumfries Volunteers. Burns wrote from the Brow eight days before his death thanking Gracie for "an airing in his carriage". He is also mentioned in R. D. Thornton's `William Maxwell to Robert Burns' (pub. 1979., pp 57, 184). There is a comment about Betty Gracie, "daughter of the banker James Gracie who had been born at New Abbey." Later in the text is "James Gracie ... was born at New Abbey within a stone's throw of Sweetheart Abbey, His daughter Betty came to Dr Maxwell, as one of his first patients, after she had aborted herself. James offered his carriage to bring Burns back from Brow, just days before his death ...". There are several Gracies in `McDowall's Memorials of St Michael's' but I have not checked them. 1. RE: [D-G LIST] Thomas Blacklock
    2. Mike Calder
    3. G'day Linda, I gather from the message regarding BLACKLOCK that you have copies of the volumes of Donald Whyte's "A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada before Confederation". I had not heard of this book before but it could provide the answer and loosen a few bricks in my wall regarding a GRACIE (or GRACEY/GRACY) in Canada. In a letter written by my wife's GGFather to his son in 1903 he says:- "My grandfather had three uncles one of whom settled in Canada, one in North of Ireland and one in Edinburgh. The Canadian I remember hearing was a man of some note in Quebec and was drowned in the St. Lawrence........." I originally thought that he was talking about "America" and that the man then moved to Canada as a UEL but that has drawn a blank. The GRACIE (or any others) that I seek would have been born in Dumfriesshire, probably Morton, Durrisdeer or Sanquhar Parishes, in the period 1688 to about 1800. The reason for the longish period is that there is a possibility that he meant "brothers" rather than "uncles". I believe I have found the Edinburgh one - John Black GRACIE born 1799 in Wanlockhead. The unearthing of the Canadian would be a major breakthrough in sorting out my wife's forefathers. Trusting you can shed light on my darkness I thank you in advance for anything you may be able to uncover. Mike. 3. Hi Christine, There are many Gaelic names in south-west Scotland but 'penpont' isn't one of them; it's entirely British. It is derived from the old Brythonic language which wsas native to much of the area and means 'Bridge end' or 'Bridge head'. Which bridge is referred to is a matter of some speculation but possibly that over the River Scar. As a matter of interest if the name 'Penpont' was Gaelic it would be rendered 'Kin-drochet' Regards Roy ----- Original Message ----- From: "christine thomas" <christine@thomas7765.fsnet.co.uk> To: <DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 04, 2004 1:49 PM Subject: [D-G LIST] Penpont > I read all the listings with interest and live in hope that someone will refer to my TOOLAN family! What caught my eye were the recent listings about Penpont cemetery. Is Penpont a Gaelic word? The reason I ask is that Penpont in Welsh would mean "on top of the bridge" - is there a bridge near the cemetery? Sorry I can never help anyone with their enquiries but I enjoy looking in! 3. Hi Barbara...I don't know where Ecclefechan is, but according to the 1851 census, my folks lived in the Parish of Kirkcolm. In June of 1852 they boarded the ship Mayflower New York either in Glasgow or Greenock. The voyage originated in Glasgow but made a stop in Greenock on the Clyde a few days after departure. From there they sailed to New York City and arrived on 21 July 1852. The family shows up again in the 1861 Canadian census in Ontario. I'm not sure how or when they arrived there. 3. Hi Everyone, I am wondering if this lady is still researching her Kennedy family in Dumfries. A message posted to this site on 8/1/2000 by Margo stated that she had the following: Robert Kennedy, Butcher, married to Jane Richardson 10th March, 1871, they had a son Robert born 1871 also. I have collected a bit of info on Robert, the butcher and his brothers. I am eager to compare notes with Margo, as she may have a piece of this jigsaw, that I am unable to find, mainly as I live too far away, even although I have contacted the Ewart Library to no avail. If anyone can help, I would love to hear from you. Thanks again Peter & Heather, at the moment I can not think how to approach that snippet of information though, so will hold onto it in case it is needed later. Kind regards Fiona Down Under
