Hallo again to all of you I have received quite a few replies to my previous request but I have not yet solved my SCOTT questions. The following two SCOTT brothers died a few years apart and are both buried in Southwick / Colvend >Andrew SCOTT baptised 27 Oct 1814 Urr died 27 Oct 1837 Glencaple Quay >Robert SCOTT baptised 8 Apr 1817 Urr died 13 Oct 1839 Sheffield Would I be able to get official Death Certificates for them or was 1837/1839 before official registration. Alternatively would I find any Death Notices in publications of those years ? I would like to establish whether the two brothers were married and whether they had any children. Any help would be appreciated. Andrew will not have a death certificate because SR in Scotland didn't start till 1855. Robert may have a death cert because SR started in England in mid 1837............... however English death certificates give very little information compared to Scottish SR ones..and definitely do not give you the names of the parents of the deceased. Not all deaths were registered in England even after SR began. But Robert should appear in a burial register ..the english were more diligent in keeping those. Which parish is Glencaple Quay in?. Hi Audrey, In this context 'loaning' almost certainly means lane. Probably an unsurfaced and therefore 'green' lane. I'm not familiar with area of Greenbrae and unfortunately your note doesn't give me enough information to find it, but I would take a look at 'old-maps' and you'll probably find it's marked. Barbara, David McKay's wife was Margaret McKenzie. Believe they would have emigrated 1840-44. I can't find them in 1841 census for Scotland so they may have left by then. They ended up in Middlesex and Norfolk Cos., Ontario. I'd like to determine his parentage. Any John or Angus McKay emigrating about then to the same place? Or his siblings that I mentioned before? Thank you so much for your help. Chris
Hello Christine, I have looked thru both volumes of A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants To Canada Before Confederation,1867, by Whyte, There is one ONE Burke Listed. Page 31 #871 BURKE, Edward ca 1777-Jan. 1839. To Halifax, NS and died there. (That's all there is) NO mention of wife or children) As for David McKay, and his Father Angus, there are about 15 Angus McKays, and it is not possible to 'pin down' which one he would be. Also looked for David McKay. With these names, I need more details. Do you have a wife's name? That would help. Also if they emigrated after 1867, it would not be in these books. If you want to send me more details, I will give it another try, Sorry I could not be of much help, Barb in BC blogan@shaw.ca ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christine Draisey" <cdraisey@mchsi.com> To: <DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 14, 2004 7:15 AM Subject: [D-G LIST] Emmigrants to Canada > I'm interested in finding out if the following (dates are approximate) are mentioned in Donald Whyte's books, "A Dictionary of Scottish Emmigrants to Canada" - > (1) BURKE / BURK, JOHN > b. 1806, place unknown > children: PETER, DONALD, RODERICK, SARAH > > (2) McKAY, DAVID > b. 1816, probably Urquhart, Ross & Cromarty > siblings also emigrated: JOHN (1805), HUGH (1808), PETER (1818) > father: ANGUS (?) > Really appreciative of your help. > Chris > > > ==== DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY Mailing List ==== > <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> > If your line involves the surname GRAHAM why not join > CLAN-GRAHAM-L@rootsweb.com and find out more. > <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> >
Hallo All I have not paid much attention to my SCOTT ancestors from D and G but now need to follow-up on a few questions. I have a Robert SCOTT x Elizabeth McJORE. Robert born abt 1781 married abt 1814 and died Ryes, Southwick 15 Dec 1844 Elizabeth born 21 Sep 1784 Lochrutton, Kircudbright died 10 Mar 1862, Bognow, Southwick The above couple had 8 children but I have an interest in the following two: Andrew SCOTT baptised 27 Oct 1814 Urr died 27 Oct 1837 Glencaple Quay Robert SCOTT baptised 8 Apr 1817 Urr died 13 Oct 1839 Sheffield. I would like to find out whether these two sons were married and had children before they died at 22 and 23 years respectively. My particular interest is in finding the father of a Samuel SCOTT who was born about 1839 in "Dumfries" and left for South Africa about 1858 never to return to Scotland. I would appreciate to hear from anybody who has links to the above family Kind regards from South Africa Dennis Pretorius Commercial Genealogical Researcher/Kommersiƫle Genealogiese Navorser List Owner of SAGenealogy E-mail list/Lyseienaar SAGenealogie poslys E-Mail/E-pos: Krugersdorp@pixie.co.za Web address/Webadres: http://mzone.mweb.co.za/residents/k75/genealogy.html Telephone/Telefoon: +27-83-324-2238
One more web site for headstones. http://www.ogsottawa.on.ca/ While the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid is good, it hasn't been updated for many years. There are some of the Ontario Genealogical Society branches that didn't participate and so some counties are missing completely. The Ottawa branch is putting an index to it's transcriptions online at the site above. On both these sites, the letters and numbers represent the branch and publication number if you wish to purchase the complete transcription or you can request a look up from the branch (for a fee; check the branch site). Links to all the branches can be found at: http://www.ogs.on.ca/ You can also request look ups on this site once you know the cemetery: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/CAN/CA-ONT-CEMETERIES.html Good hunting, Linda

I am looking for parents for a William (and also siblings of his) reputed to have been born in Kirkpatrick-Durham on 18th August 1799. I knew about this web site but hadn't checked for my new found Campbells in Bayfield,Huron Co. Ontario. http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa/ I found 27 Campbells buried there and I'm sure most of them,if not all,are direct descendants of my gr.gr.grandmothers brother Malcolm Campbell, born 1802 in Appin Argyle Scotland and died in Bayfield 1883. He moved there in 1844 and is buried in Bayfield cemetery. Thanks for jogging my memory, Frank McGonigal Ont.Canada.

Hi List, Thank you very much for all the help you have given me with the above. I have been on the site and found it very helpful. If I can return the favour, please don't hesitate to ask. Cheers Dilys NZ
I'm interested in finding out if the following (dates are approximate) are mentioned in Donald Whyte's books, "A Dictionary of Scottish Emmigrants to Canada" - (1) BURKE / BURK, JOHN b. 1806, place unknown children: PETER, DONALD, RODERICK, SARAH (2) McKAY, DAVID b. 1816, probably Urquhart, Ross & Cromarty siblings also emigrated: JOHN (1805), HUGH (1808), PETER (1818) father: ANGUS (?) Really appreciative of your help. Chris
Hi, I received this from another list I belong to and thought it might be of some help to anyone doing research in the U.S. <This is one of the 85,724 cemetery photos free at http://teafor2.com> The befuddled mess of gray matter in my head, that I refer to as memory, seems to recall another two sites, Find a Grave and Virtual Cemetery, both in the U.S. Does anyone know if there's something comparable to that in Canada? Thanks May
