Hi List, I was just pondering the lack of information found on Walter Ritchie, husband of the said Martha, when the blindingly obvious thought occurred to me that Walter & Martha would probably be buried in the same grave. The bad news of course is that I don't know where Martha is buried. But I do know when and where Martha died so I thought someone may be able to point me at some burial records,or MIs,which could be in a likely spot adjacent to the scene of Martha's demise. Martha Ritchie died July 22nd,1884,aged 88 at English Street,Annan where she had been living with two sons. Martha was noted as a widow by 1851 so Walter had predeceased her. Her two sons,James and Angus, neither of whom appear to have married, eventually died at the same location so they may very well be buried in the same spot. Thanks for any help that may be forthcoming. Ian Ritchie
Hi all, I am planning to visit D-G next weekend but would like to know as soon pas possible whether or not Monday 31 August is a public holiday in the area. I know that DGFHS will be closed on that day but will the Ewart Library be open ? In advance, many thanks Don Donald Craig Liverpool UK
Can anyone tell me if they have heard of or know where the following are. Corsockbridge? , Kirkconnel. An Agnes Milligan born there c1801, daughter of William Milligan and Catherine Hunter. Glouroe'r?, possibly in the Closeburn area. This is where my 3x Great Grandfather, John Sharpe, died in 1823. This is according to the headstone at Dalgarnock Kirkyard. Thanks Tom Shaw
Dear Tom Shaw, Putting Corsock bridge and Kirkconnel, two of the places you wanted to locate into Google yielded the following: http://www.origins.net/GRO/Places/kirkcudbright.html http://members.tripod.com/bob_newcumnock/crosshistory/Kirkconnelx.html A search for Glouroe'r was unsuccessful, but Closeburn brought up a web page of a beautiful church there. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~dfsgal/Closeburn/cbrn-1.htm Perhaps this will get you a little closer.... I understand that there was an electoral roll for Dumfries in 1838. Can anybody please tell me what information would be given in this document and how it can be accessed. Thanks in advance. Dave (Ssouthport)

Just an observation. Since your GRACIE was involved in banking and also had 2 sons who were writers I think it very likely he was a lawyer as well. Lawyers in country towns at the time often lent money on their own account and I can think of at least one other (in Melrose ) who was certainly a bank agent. Worth checking with the professional bodies in Edinburgh as they - sometimes- have biog details. Hi all I would be interested to hear from Fiona, who last year wrote about the McCarmick family from Mill of Airies, 1851 Census. The head of household, James McCarmick was the husband of my second great-great aunt, Elizabeth McClelland, daughter of Hugh McClelland and Sarah Thompson, of Clutag. At the end of her posting Fiona states that James and Elizabeth had a son John James but did not know anything more. In fact, John James McCormick died aged 33, journeyman stone-mason, of Phthisis on 6 July 1877, four years before his mother. In fact, all their children, sons, died before the parents did. James McCormick lived on until 1886, when he died of Debility of Old Age, on 6 June. He had been an Inn-keeper. Can anyone tell me what inns there were in Kirkinner at that time, please? Best wishes Don Donald Craig Liverpool UK
I know somewhere in all my replies or questions I have asked this before. I have been onto the site for Parish Locator, but it does not appear on there, nor any of the surrounding place names I have. Is there another site that may give me an indication of its position & how far north of Dunscore it is? Also is it still 'around' today? Barbara
Hi Barbara Brockhillstone is at OS NX870857. Take the B729 through Dunscore village and turn right about half a mile North of the village. (this is the road that leads past Lagg Tower) Brockhillstone is about 1½ -2 miles on the left, just about opposite the road to Dempsterton farm. Regards Ian. Diane, Would you please be so kind as to see how many DUNBAR's are listed? If there are many, please let me have the total and I'll see if I borrow the books on inter-library loan. Note: As I was preparing this listing, I noted a high number of what appeared to be Middle Initials "D" in the listings for siblings. In checking the book's listing of abbreviations, a lower case "d" is used for died or dead, and no instance of the upper case "D" was shown as an abbreviation. However, in nearly every instance of a listing with siblings throughout the book, the "D" appears following the given name. This letter may have been used to indicate died or dead instead of the lower case letter, or it may truly be a middle initial. Just a word of caution..... Hi Audrey A large portion of Dumfries 1881 census was lost, so has never been filmed. Other ways are directories and Valuation rolls. Regards Ian. Audrey, This is an excerpt from a message I sent to the List a few years ago about this problem. --------- The missing EDs were EDs 13 through 27. I found the following handwritten note after ED 7 and before ED 8 on LDS film 0224047: "Dumfries 13-27 not found in Basement Rooms at removal." (As to which Basement Rooms, I do not know. In Edinburgh? Dumfries?) EDs 1 through 12 cover most but not all of Greyfriars and St Mary's Parishes. None of the EDs for St Michael's Parish survived. My best guess is that over 50% of the population of the Burgh is NOT enumerated in the surviving EDs. Perhaps a more knowledgeable Lister has a better assessment. Below is a listing of the Enumeration Districts ON the film and the streets that are included in each ED: ED 1 - Part of Greyfriars Parish - parts of: Castle St., Church Place, Church Crescent, Academy St., Nithmount Terrace, Buccleuch St., Irving St., Gordon St., George St., Charlotte St., Burgh Police Station ED 2 - Part of Greyfriars Parish - parts of: Bridge St., Brewrey St., Friars Vennel, St. David St., Buccleuch St., County Prison ED 3 - Part of Greyfriars Parish - parts of: Buccleuch St., Castle St., Friars Vennel, Greyfriars St., St. David St., St. Andrew St., Queensberry St., Church Crescent ED 4 - Part of Greyfriars Parish - parts of: High St., Chapel St., Church Place, St Andrew St., Queensberry St., Queensberry Square ED 5 - Part of Greyfriars Parish - parts of: Friars Vennel, Irish St., Bank St., Whitesands, Brewrey St., Bridge St. ED 6 - Part of Greyfriars Parish - parts of: Friars Vennel, High St., Long Close, Irish St. ED 7 - Part of Greyfriars Parish - parts of: Long Close, High St., Midsteeples Buildings, Turnpike Close, Bank St., Irish St. ED 8 - Part of Greyfriars Parish - parts of: Academy St., Queensberry St., Queensberry Square, King St., Loreburn St. ED 9 - Part of Greyfriars Parish - parts of: Loreburn St., Nichol Rae's Close, Union St., High St., Queensberry Square, Queensberry St., King St. ED 10 - Part of St Mary's Parish - parts of: Nichol Rae's Close, South Queensberry St., Union St., High St., English St., Loreburn St. ED 11 - Part of St Marys Parish - parts of: English St., Shakespeare St., Queen St. ED 12 - Part of St Mary's Parish - parts of: Queen St., English St., High St., Shakespeare St. I hope this helps anyone frustrated with disappearing ancestors in Dumfries during the 1881 Census.
