    1. Transfer of ScottishDocuments.com to ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk
    2. mscaleb
    3. This is off-topic, but I was wondering if what others thought about this. I received an email on the subject transfer. While I know this will give access to more information in one spot, I have mixed emotions about it. I like the Scottish documents website and found it easy to use. I liked being able to narrow down my search before being asked to pay a fee. The Scotlandspeople website has more information, but I didn't like having to logon and immediately pay a fee. I appreciate the website affords access to information I would otherwise have to hire a researcher to review, but I found that I quickly went through the credits I purchased because a credit was required to look at nearly every page. I personally plan to use the Scottish documents website as much as I can before the merger sometime in 2006. Sharon Shumate Austin, TX

Get advanced junk mail protection with MSN 8. > http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail > > ______________________________ Pat, There is a superb description of Dumfriesshire in the early 1800s in Dorothy Wordsworth's "A Tour Made in Scotland A. D. 1803", recently reissued by James Thin, Edinburgh. Accompanied by her brother and Coleridge, she entered the shire in the southeast, traveled west to Dumfries, went up the Nith to south of Sanquhar and left via Wanlockhead and Leadhills. She was favorably impressed with the parts she saw, although not uncritical. Wordsworth forever damned Dumfries for its ill treatment of the memory of Robert Burns, whose body then lay buried in a poorly marked grave in an obscure part of the cemetery and annoyed with their accommodations in Leadhills. Also keep in mind there are several allusions to mid 18th century Dumfriesshire in Tobias Smollett's travelogues, such as "The Expedition of Humphry Clinker". These are fictional accounts, but the genius of Smollett lies in the fact that the adventures are based on actual events vividly described, yet almost all of them known to him only second or third hand. For instance, Clinker gives an elaborate description of his visit to Drumlanrigg and meeting with the Duke of Queensberry, but Smollett made only three brief visits to Scotland ‹ where he was born but left at age 19 after completing his medical studies in 1737 ‹ none of which included Dumfriesshire. You should not be left with a negative impression of the county. Gil Nicol.

    2. Carn, I personally can't shed any light on your RAIN family, but you might want to check the online 1851 Census for any RAINs living in the Dumfries and Galloway region at that time. Please note that when you type in the Surname RAIN, the search results start with DRAIN - don't know why, but it does. Just move forward a few pages until you get to the start of the RAINs. 2. carn rain
    3. good morning, My name is Carnegie Rain, to date I have been able to trace members of my family back to Willian Rain (b) 10 Aug 1837 (possibly Preston Lancs) Recently i received an email to the effect that his father was born in Kirkcudbright in 1815 by the name of John. However, looking at the site i can only find one person who was christened in1815 by the name John. presumably christened the same year as at birth. Off the kircudbright sight i found two William Rain one c1769 married to Mary Bell c1773 with a son John Rain 1807, and another William Rain Married to Elizabeth Stewart with a son John Rain 1815. Should you be able to throw any light on the Rain family it would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to being involved with your society, and thank you for the immediate responce. Carn.

I have a Will that (along with many other things) makes me think: JONET GREIRSONE, dated October 15th, 1582; CC8/8/11, pages 3. Edinburgh Commissary Court.... ....sometime spouse to William MacFadzeane in BARSEWALLA [sic], alias BRAIDWELL..... Notice how Barsewalla [sic] is alias Braidwell? My question is, - have their been studies by scholars that pinpointed or identified these ancient little villages, towns, compared them and perhaps written books that gives their history.....one example that we have in the United States is something entitled "extinct towns". Can someone direct me to a good source? 2. Hi David, I'm sure we have exchanged emails in the past. > My question is, - have their been studies by scholars that pinpointed or > identified these ancient little villages, towns, compared them and perhaps > written books that gives their history... The best paper source is Groomes but the following new online free access service is the best I know of for information on 'extinct' placenames: http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/ You should then be able to pinpoint the location. Once you have done that look at the SAFHS Membership List at: www.safhs.org.uk where you can identify the Genealogical Society for that area. If anyone knows of books about the actuall history of the place they will. Sandy
