    2. Arthur Rutherford
    3. I wonder if anyone in this Group is researching Rutherfurd or anyone who would be able to help me find Andrew Rutherford and Isobel Scot. Births around 1725 and marriage about 1750 in the Borders area, Roxburghshire, probably around Jedburgh. I have their children Walter b.1754 Andrew b. 1757 Robert b. 1760 and Thomas b. 1763 Suggestions of where I might search for them would also be helpful. Many thanks in anticipation. My thanks to everyone for their helpful facts about the Irish in Scotland. The last child of Thomas and Jane was Annie, born 1870 in Campsie Stirling. The family lived in Pendlebury Lancs by the 1881 census. Indeed the irregularity is readily overcome by the expression of remorse and payment of a fine to compensate for the fee the parishioner sought to evade. I assume the charge is leveled only if the parishioner and his bride return to his home parish. In any case, a record of the marriage or banns or both should be found in the bride's parish. 2. Janet McClary
    3. Dear Ann, The only historically direct reference to the McClary family in Scotland that I've come across can be found within the Fellows family genealogy at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/5832/thefellowsfamily.htm as remembered by Mary Fellows Cavanagh: 'In the "McGaffey Genealogy" we read that the McGaffeys fought in the wars of Scotland in the Seventeenth Century. "After the defeat of the Covenanters at Brothwell Bridge, the extensive landed estates of these families were confiscated." Then my great, great grandfather, Neal McGaffey, fled to Ireland with his family."He was accompanied by his kinsman, McClary and family. They brought with them a good sized treasure of gold, which they had secreted and saved from the wreck of their fortunes." ' Other family information from this time is very scanty; Irish sources I've sought for specific members are scattered or destroyed. A fuller account of one McClary lineage is Horace P. McClary's "Four Generations of McClarys" referring to the family of Revolutionary War hero Maj. Andrew McClary. It mentions their involvement in the Siege of Derry in 1689 and eventual migration to the colonies in 1726 with a Presbyterian minister and his congregation. If this is of any help I would be glad to keep in touch off-site. Sincerely, Janet McClary Ontario, Canada Ann Milroy wrote: I have recently been doing some McChlery research. My gg grandmother was Isabella McChlery born 1809, Stoneykirk and I have traces her line back to my gggggg grandparents James McChlery and Isabel Tarbert. I am now attempting to compile a one name study. So far I have some 500 - 600 names - all McChlerys or married to one. Initially I have concentrated on McChlery families originating in Wigtownshire but will extend coverage. Variations include McChlerie, McChery, McCherie, McCleary, McClearie, Chlery Clerie etc. Any information on the family from list members will be gratefully received. Ann

    3. Good morning Chris One way of finding parents is to ascertain when they died -hopefully after 1855. A good source would be a wedding of one of their children - to see if they are still living - and another would be on the 1881 Census. The Irish literally flooded Scotland due to a) the Plantations and b) the Famines there. Just have a wee look at Glasgow in the mid-1800's. Ewan PS If I can help further please ask. 3. There was constant traffic across from the SW of Scotland to Ireland. The crossing is shorter than the English channel in places. Travel by road was a nightmare and there were no trains of course until later on. Havent checked but would guess about 1840s. So for someone eg in 1775, they would consider it easier to get to Ireland than to Edinburgh. If you can find the TOOLANs alive and kicking in the 1851 census that of course should give their places of birth.
