Many thanks to all who replied regarding Awhirk. Sheena.
Researching my Thomsons of New Abbey, Lochrutton & Troqueer I found this one intriguing. Wm CARNOCHAN d Loshes Troqueer 5.11.1848 (90) w Margt THOMSON 6.5.1817 (70) da Agnes McLAUGHLAN 10.11.1853 (72) John CORSON d Jamaica 1814 (27) Stewart McLAUGHLAN d Millhill 23.3.1864 (50) Who is John CORSON ? Is it just a case of the stonemason mishearing Corson for Carnochan? I have only been working on my tree for about 6 months but have not yet come across such a difference in spelling. I presume that the earliest this MI could have been 'made' was 1848 after William's death, at which point cost would have prevented correction. Mathematically John could have been Agnes' younger brother. Any ideas? Further I have links to MIs 120,121,144 & 145. MI 109 could be one of mine, but I am checking it. If it is then I might have a link to MI 111. Anyone out there with similar connections in the Stewartry? David Thomson
A year or so ago, I gathered up the death dates of a number of ancestors from the Dumfries & Galloway area of Scotland and put them in the hands of Ian McClumpha of Imchad.. e-mail: imchad@freeola.com <mailto:imchad@lfreeola.com>, ( http://www.imchad.freeola.com/).....and he came up with quite a few obituaries of interest for my famuily history at a very reasonable price. This is a good method for those of us who live "abroad"! Mary Mattila

Hi I would also be very interested in information re: obituaries for Dumfries, in particular, for John Henry (1808-1875) and his wife Alice Cameron (Carmody) (1822-1867). They were married in 1847 in Bellingham, Northumberland. Many thanks. Kirsten McTavish
I just don't have time right now, please remove my name from list.
Hi everyone. Can anyone tell me if there is an index to death notices/obituaries for the later nineteenth-century newspaper(s) for Dumfries? Or do I need to be on the spot and consult the papers themselves? I'm interested in seeing if notices occur for Margaret McGowan (nee McLauchlan), who died in Dumfries 15/4/1890, and her husband William Corson McGowan, who died 18/6/1879. Since William died in Penrith, any mention of him might have taken slightly longer than normal to appear. Most grateful for any information or help. Speaking of newspapers, I have just completed a three week survey of The Times, [London], and was very successful in doing so, garnishing at least/perhaps two-hundred entries on Griersons, Greer, Greir, Grear, McGreery, and some MacGregor. I had to work and work at it. The primary reason is that whenever you use digital archiving you have to be a little smarter than the computer....for example, I found a death notice dated April, 1788 which I never seen before. How? I didn't find it under Grierson, and the primary reason for that, is the computer can only read what is there; I found it under the keyword: LAG, and so forth with the Griersons of Dalgoner and so forth with the Griersons of Rockhall, .... Using keyword combinations, i.e. - Roek/Rcck/Hill, etc., as the computer can ONLY Read what is there, found one under Rockhull, and some under Griersun and so forth......just make a note of how some of the letters are shaped, and what other mis-matched words come up whenever sorting through them. Just a friend tip. David ________________________________________________________________ Sent via the WebMail system at mail.tqci.net --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by mail.tqci.net]

The first dates to around 1790 and the second about 50 years later. These are online at the Edinburgh University Website: Here is the 'horrendous' URL to take yo directly to the Kirkmahoe pages. _http://stat-acc-scot.edina.ac.uk/stat-acc-scot/stat-acc-scot.asp?session-id=0 6a45b0e9b933bc23402a9b97abfc50f_ (http://stat-acc-scot.edina.ac.uk/stat-acc-scot/stat-acc-scot.asp?session-id=06a45b0e9b933bc23402a9b97abfc50f) You will get a good insight as to what the Parish was like and how it changed in the 50-60 year period between the two publications. Also has anyone with access to the MI's for Durrisdeer come across JEAN MENZIES or MINZES born about 1760. TIA Fiona I have checked the MSC transcriptions (made in the 1970s) but there isn't a Jean MENZIES or MINZIES. There are 8 memorials with MENZIES listed but none with MINZIES. I have seen a few MINZIES listed for PENPONT but your Jean isn't there either. Could list the MENZIES from Durisdeer and the MINZIES for Penpont but it would be a longish email. Sandy

That may have some wrong information. In 1989 we visited Awhirk farm (Ardwell parish) and it was run by a cousin of ours, Jackie McLean. He had run it for some time but I know has since passed away. He is a distant cousin of my husband's family - there have been McLean's running that farm for quite some time. My husband's gr-great-grandfather was living there in 1920 when he died and Jackie remembered hearing about him. Jackie's father was running it then. They were tenant farmer's (dairy farm) and when Jackie died he had girls and I suppose the owner has found new tenants. From what I have heard, Jackie's wife may still be living and attending Ardwell church. You might contact the minister there to see if she's still there. I believe a year ago I was in contact with the clerk and he was going to pass on my regards to her. I have also heard that there are two Awhirks - so you might want to check that out as well. G'day , Is there anyone out there who really loves transcribing early testaments? :-) I have one for Robert GRACIE from 1673 which looks just like the example mentioned below from www.ScottishDocuments.com >>> From a testament of 1722. Some letters are recognisably Secretary Hand, but the writing is not as neat as the previous example. Many letters are cursive (either untidy versions of Secretary Hand, Italic, and other writing styles, or forms of the writer's own invention). Other problems include elaborate letters which interfere with other letters or make several words look like one continuous word). >>> I could painstakingly set about matching letters etc. and this I will probably have to do but if there IS someone who likes doing this I would hate to deprive them of the pleasure ;-). If there is a KS I will be pleased to forward the three JPGs. If you don't ask etc......... Cheers.. Mike. G'day , I have been doing some searches using Batch Numbers. In the GENUKI page on "Finding L.D.S. Batch Numbers". At step 8 it also says: "In cases where the prefix is not specified, this step can only be a matter of trial and error - prefixes C, P and M are the most common prefixes and should be tried first, but E, I and J do occur quite regularly." Thus far, as far as I can recall, I have not seen any prefixes except C and M in Dumfriesshire. Has anyone with more experience than I ever come across P, E, I or J? If I don't have to try them it saves a bit of time ;-) TIA Mike. Mike CALDER http://members.optusnet.com.au/mikecalder/ Researching: CALDER, DIXON, TUSON, GRACIE D&GFHS #2979

I too have a RICHARDSON from the Dumfries area. Margaret RICHARDSON born abt. 1830 married John JACKSON born abt. 1823. The couple was farming in Canada by 1846 with children William, Mary, Helen, Isabella, Janet, John, Andrew, Archibald, James, and Robert. Have no earlier information on Margaret I'm afraid, but just wondered if anyone had a connection. ______________________________ > ATTACHMENT part 6 message/rfc822 Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 21:42:33 -0600 From: Mary Mattila To: DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY-D Digest V04 #248 Hi Chum....I don't think we are connected, according to the information I have at the moment...my Richardsons are farmers in the parish of Torthorwald in Dumfrieshire.
