Hello Everyone: Earlier last night, I asked if we could start developing a Place Names list, mostly for England. BARBARA WRIGHT has completed all but 19 items from the extensive list that I created - from obituaries, marriages and births, mostly Griersons. Below are the 186 items which she has fully developed, and there still remaining 19 items which are listed with an ASTERICK......please take a close look at them and see if you can say where these items belong to, ENGLAND, IRELAND, WALES or SCOTLAND? The numbers to look at are: 14, 25, 29, 38, 49, 55, 61, 76, 78, 90, 95, 100, 114, 120, 133, 134, 136, 155 and lastly, 166. This list can be used by all of us once completed to better, and more fully understand the geography of the U.K., not only for Americans, but for Britains as well, and anyone not born there. Thanks to everyone for their inputs. I work on these things (that list and other things) all the time, so sometimes I think that's all others have to do as well. I'm grateful for the map bits, I'll see if I can gather the information that way. Hi Lois As you will have noticed, there is more than one Auchengibbert. The one in Urr is between the villages of Crocketford, on the main A75 road, and Milton on the Old Military road. It is a fairly large farm and probably would have been a 'farmtown' in days gone past. Regards Ian. Researching Family History in Dumfries & Galloway ~ and beyond. Auchengibbert was, for a time, the home of "Mother Buchan and her fanatical adherents". This was in the late 1700s and a search on Google for the "Buchanites" may give you some information. I do have some detail - but Auchengibbert is only briefly mentioned. I can let you have that information if you wish. Could I add that once found on streetmap, you can also try _www.old-maps.co.uk_ (http://www.old-maps.co.uk) to see what the area was like 150 or so years ago. Le meas edward Limpsfield, Surrey Using Norton SystemWorks
David, Did you forward this list to the D&G in error, or are you actually asking Listers to help you determine exactly where these places are located in England and Scotland? Why I'm asking is that the beginning sentence implies that you directed it to an individual. Most all of these locations can be found by going to either: _www.streetmap.co.uk_ (http://www.streetmap.co.uk) or _www.multimap.com/_ (http://www.multimap.com/) and typing in the place name. Specific streets can be found also via these sites. Churches? - probably not. For those, I would use _www.Google.com_ (http://www.Google.com) and give it a go there. I've had very good luck in that regard. Good Hunting! Yours aye, John Jardine Cincinnati, Ohio USA D&G FHS Member #1918 Alba mo dhuthaich gu deireadh mo la! (Scotland my homeland forever!) Lois, Auchengibbert is both a farm name and a wooded area just north of Tynron village. Go to _www.streetmap.co.uk_ (http://www.streetmap.co.uk) and key in Auchengibbert as a place name, then zoom in on the map to show the area close-up. Please, if you are going to help, here is the completed list. It is very neatly layed out, very professionally done and that's the way I need it to be returned to me. Notice, if you will, the brackets for the entries that I have already developed, such as: Edinburgh, [Scotland]. Please follow suit. These are very important entries, and need to be completed before I can continue transcribing here. If anyone on the Dumfries-Galloway list cares to help by identifying these items, it would make a great pre-cursor for your research as well, and for others. All insights and help completing this list are much appreciated. I don't mind if it gets passed around either, to other who may need such a list. It would be a great benefit for non U.K. residents. There are 186 entries, so take your time. Hello - is anyone familiar with the genealogical historical connection of Thomas Reid [c1937], of Rochlall or (Brigadier) R. Morgan [c1959] who lived in that mansion afterwards, and can anyone tell me perhaps who owned the mansion of Rockhall after the year, c1964? I was of the belief that St. Andrew's Catholic Cathedral was the only "papist" church in the Dumfries area until I read the 1845 Statistical Account of Scotland section on Troqueer that contained the following information. Apparently the mansion house of Kirkconnel in Troqueer was the most extensive and valuable property in the Parish ,and that a "Catholic Chapel is attached to it, appropriately seated and furnished." Would there be records from this church? Where? Are there other Catholic churches in the Dumfries area outside of St. Andrews? Dave Carney Ottawa, Ontario
