I wonder if anyone can tell me about the above index. I was told that this is an index of passport applications (English) and am wondering if this is available on-line or where do I need to go to look at it. I am looking for Thomas BACON who moved from England to USA around 1870-1880 ALSO Daniel CADDELL who moved from Scotland to NY, USA around 1881 many thanks for your time, Christa Le Vine Kent

Hi Pamela, Trying to decipher old Parish records can be difficult, I know, but here goes with your, I guess marriage, in 1682 : >>October 29th 1682. I am looking for any information on the ANNANDALE ESTATE especially up to the mid 1800s. It appears that BLINDBURN is mentioned in their records and this may well be the BLINBURN that we have been looking for for eons Alison in Calgary
Trying to confirm that Ian Mccall (manager of Urquhart Castle) and Wayne McCall (heir to Urquhart Castle) are the sons of Admiral Sir Henry William Urquhart McCall of Ayrshire? Thanks, Ron

My grandfather, James Smith Kynnersley, was sent from Salford to Dumfries in 1899, aged 9, to live with his aunt after the death of his parents. His aunt Margaret Smith lived in Castle Street. My mother would like to find out which school he went to. Does anyone with a knowledge of Dumfrie town have any idea which schools were in the Castle Street area at that time ? He would have attended school from 1899 to about 1905 I think. Did children change schools at 11 or so in those days? I would apprcsiate anone's ideas so that I can narrow down my search a bit! I believe the Ewart Library has some school records (?) Great news! <>I am delighted to announce the launch of the Stewartry (Kirkcudbright) Free Census project. This is part of the larger UK FreeCen Project - an internet based 'free-to-view' database that will enable researchers to view details of the UK Censuses between the years of 1841 and 1891, especially the ability to search by surname across census years and counties. I am the county co-ordinator for The Stewartry of Kirkcudbright and am appealing for transcribers to help - initially with the 1841 census. <> All you need to take part is a computer with CD drive or access to a microfilm or microfiche reader. We supply everything else: the CD or film/fiche and the software. <> The project is a global on-line venture designed for ordinary family historians wherever they are, who would like to make contribution to this great hobby. <> If you are interested, please contact me, Jane (Douglas) Brayshaw at drybrochj.netscape.net <> UK FreeCen project overview: http://freecen.Rootsweb.com Scotland FreeCEN project overview: http://www.users.waitrose,com/~census <http://www.users.waitrose,com/%7Ecensus> Thank you Jane Brayshaw Stewartry Co-ordinator for FreeCEN (Kirkcudbright)
Hi Ian, Was most interested in the meanings of 'nether' and 'yet' and thank you for thinking to pass them on. Having a knowledge of old terms is so useful. Kind regards, Joan
Many thanks to Jane, Bill, John, Brian, Jim and Don. Without your great help I would still be floundering, looking in the wrong area for Netheryet. My 3xG Grandmother died there but was buried at Mouswald which I guess is about 20 mls away from the one near Redcastle. Now to dig a bit deeper and sort out which of the two!. Happy hunting for you all. Regards, Joan Wells (nee Lockerbie)
I must have missed the earlier post - but I'm curious about the compiling and the purpose of the list. A search on the names in Google will reveal masses of information. I had a quick check for some names in a road atlas, and cross-checked with Google > 40) RATHFARNHAM, CAMBERLEY, [IRELAND] Rathfarnham appears to be a district of Dublin, Republic of Ireland. Much information on Google. "CAMBERLEY, [IRELAND]" is a mystery - guesswork on the part of somebody? > 81) WALTON-le-DALE, near PRESTON, [ENGLAND} My road map shows Walton-le-Dale just to the south of Preston, Lancashire, England. Sounds like an ancient village (on market day a day's walk from Preston for a yester-years farmer?) which now could now be a suburb or dormitory of Preston. Bags of information on Google.
