    3. Hi Alison, I think your question is answered on the website, after the list of names: "The following is from Governor Hutchinson's Collection of Original Papers and may furnish some light in respect to the above mentioned prisoners sent to this country and sold for slaves, no doubt, by order of the English Government, as a sort of banishment for their rebellion. It is probable that some of them were sent to Barbadoes, as all their names do not seem to appear in any other way in this country, except on this list. Extract from a Letter written by Rev. John COTTON to Lord General CROMWELL, dated at "Boston in N. E. 28 of 5th 1651," respecting som prisoners of the same class of persons included in the above list sent over before these arrived. The all probably were taken at the battle of Dunbar, 3 Sep 1650, when Cromwell was victorious and four thousand were slain and ten thousand made prisoners. "The Scots, whom God delivered into your hands at Dunbarre, and whereof sundry were sent hither, we have been desirous (as we could) to make their yoke easy. Such as were sick of the scurvy or other diseases have not wanted physick and chyrugery. They have not been sold for slaves to perpetual servitude, but for 6 or 7 or 8 yeares, as we do our owne; and he that bought the most of them (I heare) buildeth houses for them, for every four a house, layeth some acres of ground thereto, which he giveth them as their owne, requiring three dayes in the weeke to worke for him (by turnes) and 4 dayes for them themselves, and promiseth, as soone as they can repay him the money he layed out for them, he will set them at liberty." 2. In a message dated 11/10/2004 ljhewett@ihug.co.nz writes: Any knowledge of list of [Ewes] burials? Seeking Thomas and Nancy/Agnes Duff Sorry, the Ewes OPRs covering burials and mortcloth hires does not list Thomas or Nancy/Agnes DUFF. (Mortcloths were coffin covers hired from the Kirk for the burial service, probably to hide the fact that some coffins were quite crude. Not everyone could afford the workmanship of a skilled craftsman.) Ewes OPR Deaths and burials records cover the period 1717 to 1818. If Thomas and Nancy died later than that, there are no records surviving. I must say I was surprised to find that a hundred year period could be transcribed into a small 8 page A5 booklet. There doesn't appear to be gaps in the record, so it is possible that some deaths were were recorded elswhere. This booklet is currently being prepared for publishing by DGFHS. AND I'm still looking for couple photos AND the offer of a complementary copy for whoever can supply them. Sandy

    3. Alison, It is oft forgotten that one of the results of the American Revolution was the population of Australia. Until Britain lost its North American colonies, they were the principal destination of convicts transported as their sentence. Their crimes ranged from petty theft to murder, although few of the last were so lucky. In David Dobson's book, "Directory of Scots Banished to The American Plantations 1650-1775" {Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1984) you will find an extensive list of these hapless souls. I noticed one whose crime was being a Covenanter (this was during the "Killing Times"). I do not know what treatment they received in the colonies, but for some the sentence might have afforded them opportunity denied them at home. Best wishes, Gil Nicol

    3. Hi Alison These were Covenanters, people who were banished because they believed in the Scottish Presbyterian style of worship and refused to accept the English Episcopalian church. Primarily, the Scots refused to accept the English king as head of the church, believing, as they still do, that Jesus is the head. The Covenanters eventually won and Presbyterianism was restored in 1690, but not after many people died or were transported for their cause. Regards Ian.
