Thanks to everyone for such great response regarding map suggestions. I think I have more than enough to go on now, both online and available by order or in shops. Will wait till I am in Dumfries, since most likely the FHS will have on hand what I need. try www.nls.uk maps are in the digital library If you pass thru Edinburgh, go down to Causewayside and ask in the NLS maps library - you will need ID but not a readers ticket. I dont think the Maps catalogue is on line yet. Hello, Listers. I feel I`ve tried everywhere I can to trace the parents or siblings of Elizabeth OSBURN / OSBORNE / USBORN. She married Thomas MCMILLAN in March 1758 at Tynron so I would assume she was born some time between 1830 and 1840. She and Thomas were the parents of Thomas - my gt gt gt grandfather, Mary, Catherine, Robert, Isobelle, Andrew and Janet. If anyone out there has any information on Elizabeth or anyone else mentioned I`d love to hear from you. Many thanks Cassandra
G'day Muff, I am probably teaching granny to suck eggs but I assume you are aware of www.old-maps.co.uk . Generally the maps are vintage 1850-60s but I have found them most useful for farms etc. vintage 1841 census. I have to go via the nearest "town" and then look closely at the map to find the likely farm but it usually works even though a bit time consuming. A new resource that I recently found - maybe from someone on this list - is http://www.rcahms.gov.uk/ - The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS). Look at their databases. CANMORE Which is linked to PASTMAP. PASTMAP displays the location of: . listed buildings . the boundaries of legally protected ('scheduled') ancient monuments . every site, building, maritime feature or find recorded in Canmore I have found places mentioned in 17th - 18th - 19th C testaments shown as some form of 'scheduled' site with OS coordinates and a dot on a modern map showing where they are. I have no "field" experience in using the results but would be interested to know if they work for you as I expect to make the family history pilgrimage in the next few years providing I can still hobble around ;-). Hi Mark The National Archives in Edinburgh houses all the main records in Scotland. However, the nearest you will get to fulfilling your requirements are in the Ewart Library, Dumfries. Concentrate on the RC Reid collection. You might also want to visit the Dumfries Archive Centre but you need to know what you are looking for. Check out http://archives.dumgal.gov.uk:8814/ Probably your best bet for a B & B is Glencairn Guest House, literally only 80 yards from the Ewart Library. http://go.to/glencairn Regards Ian A McClumpha Researching Family History in Dumfries & Galloway ~ and beyond. I live in the USA and FINALLY able to visit Scotland for a week. First of all I am researching the HOLLIDAY surname and I believe the came from the area around Annan. So my question is..... Since I only have a short week, where are the best places to researcher older records (early to mid 1700's). A place that has a vast collection and or that are open longer hours? Second, Anybody know of a comfortable bed and breakfast around the dumfries area? Hopefully close to where I will be do my research. Thank You!!! Hi all, Now that I know I will be spending time in Dumfries and surrounding area, albeit probably not enough by far, I am noticing things that I need, but lack. One is local maps of large enough scale to show farms, both current and those in existence around 1780 - 1830. Could someone (or two or three) please recommend what maps I would need to get that would show the following: (The maps could be from anytime within the years given) 1. Dumfries c. 1800-1830 2. Kirkpatrick-Durham c. 1780 - 1830 3. Kirkpatrick-Irongray - 1780 - 1830 4. Old Bridge of Urr - 1780 - 1830 5. Castle Douglas - c. 1800 - 1850 6. Dalbeattie - 1800 - 1850 7.Also, you may have these, John - a current large-scale Ordnance Survey map of Kirkpatrick-Durham and surrounding area, and a current one for Castle Douglas and Kelton and their surrounding areas. I will look online in the meantime, and see what I can order in advance. The Archives too do not open on Sundays or Mondays. Normally it would be open on Tues and Wed but I think you should check what the hours are around Xmas. The Ewart should be open on the Monday and probably until Xmas Eve morning (Friday) Irene
A big thank you to those who have given me some advice on where to look further, lots of input and lots of ides to follow. Thanks go to Jenny Myers, Bruce McDowall and extra special thanks for the additional info from Amanda Roberts Kindest regards Anita McNeil
Hi, Ian and Sandy - Just to let you know that I will be in Dumfries at Glencairn B&B Dec. 19 - 22, and will hope to find the FHC open on at least one of those days, and the Ewart Library and its pile of goodies for one or two of those. Then I will enjoy wandering out around my family's stomping grounds too, so hope the weather cooperates a bit. I will be looking in particular for a very large sledge hammer with which to break down a brick wall of long standing. Here's hoping!! Sorry to use the List to let you know - wasn't successful in finding your e-mail addresses on this machine, probably because its poor memory is so overloaded. Hi, I was given the Url for the Edinburgh University research on Scottish Witchcraft. I found a Neving McGhee of Kirkineer Wigtown excomunicated on this charge (Local Trial)....... My McGhees were local to this area my ggreat grandparents are buried in Kirkineer Kirkyard.... Gave me more food for thought..... Although I have always assumed that compaired to England Scotland did not suffer the witchhunts that England did, I have to say I am suprised at the number of recorded Witchcraft trials here in Scotland.... I keyed in other names and family connections to the search in this site and found that many of my family names are represented.... This site is well worth a look if anyone wants the URL just let me know......Jean. Hi Richard! Sorry to be slow on the uptake - my computer has been down. My JOHNSTONE was Martha, daughter of Thomas Johnstone, farmer, and Christian Morton born 22 March 1815, christened 8 April 1815. Others in the family were Catherine & Mary (twins), born 22 April 1813, christened 29 April 1813; Margaret born 22 March 1815, christened 8 April 1815; Thomas born 30 April 1819, christened 17 August 1819. All christened at First Longtown Presbyterian Chapel (Cumberland). In 1813 I have Thomas farming at Ridge Head, Heathers Gill - and a native of Kirkandrews-on-Esk. In 1815 I've noted him as from Righead (sic). By 1817 he's tenant at Carwinlay Mill. All this is actually just in Cumberland, except that Christian Morton was a native of Canonbie, which is just in Dumfries & Galloway. Any use to you - or anybody else? Hi Listers I wonder if SKS might be able to help me with the lookup of a birth, marriage, death or even if he emigrated. I have tried for many years to locate the birth or marriage of the following person but as yet have not been able to locate anything. So a fresh though may help Alexander McNEIL born about 1885 Mochrum, Wigtonwshire. second son to John McNEIL and Annie GRIFFIN married 12 Dec 1884 Port William. He has an older brother James born 2 Jan 1887 and three younger sisters, all details of births etc have been found. Please can someone help me or point me in the right direction. Sorry for those of you who have read this twice. Regards Anita McNeil
Sorry I should have been more specific. I think they may be in the Kelton parish. Regards Shona
